Monday's Trail Project on Scotchman Peak was tough but productive! Led by Savannah, our crew of three tackled some serious obstacles over 1.5 miles of trail, including a large green tree early on that was heavy enough to stop hikers in their tracks, and two massive root balls further up that had caused hikers to create a steep social trail cutting off one of the switchbacks. We cleared the tree, covered the social trail, and built out more defined tread around the root balls to get things closer to the original trail line. All in a day's work! 😎

We are so excited to introduce our 2026 Summer Backcountry Ranger Intern, Greta! πŸŽ‰

Greta just finished her sophomore year at the University of Mary Washington, where she is working toward a degree in Conservation Biology with a certificate in GIS. And if that wasn't impressive enough, she's also the President of her college rugby team! Greta brings a deep passion for the outdoors, conservation, restoration, and accessibility to our wild lands, and we are thrilled to have her on the team this summer.

You can meet Greta TODAY at the State of the Scotchmans in Heron or catch her at an upcoming trail project or tabling event. Let's give her a warm Scotchmans welcome! 🐐

Our annual State of the Scotchmans is TOMORROW, Sat 6/13 from 2–6 pm MT at the beautiful Blue C Ranch. Join us for a free, family-friendly afternoon of food, beverages, desserts, live music from local favorite John Firshi & raffle prizes.

This year we're excited to feature four special additions:
πŸ”οΈ A presentation from Doug Ferrell on the Kootenai Winter Travel Collaborative, a remarkable collaborative effort that brought together snowmobile clubs, conservation groups, quiet recreation advocates, elected officials, and more to develop a shared vision for winter travel management on the Kootenai National Forest.
πŸͺš A crosscut saw demonstration with Sandy Compton and our Programs Manager, Savannah! Sandy is handcrafting a saw buck and bringing out his favorite bucking saw for a hands-on look at one of our most important trail tools.
🐻 Bear spray training and bear aware info from the Yaak Valley Forest Council! Ever wondered what it feels like to deploy bear spray? They'll have inert cans on hand so you can practice and learn best practices for staying safe in bear country.
πŸ›οΈ A preview of select online auction items in person! Come see what you're bidding on before the auction closes on Mon 6/15.

Bring a blanket or chair and settle in for an afternoon of food, music, and stories! Whether you're a longtime supporter or just getting to know the Scotchmans, we'd love to have you there. We'd love to see you there!

Last Saturday, our trail crew hit the Star Peak Trail #999 to celebrate National Trails Day with a big day of work! The 10-person team split up and leap-frogged up the mountain, cutting over 50 trees and clearing all but the last mile of trail (~10 trees). To top it off, the whole group made it to the summit, a first for 4 of them! πŸ”οΈ

Meet Gabrielle Hannum, one of our 2026 High School Scholarship winners! Gabrielle is a graduating senior from Thompson Falls High School and her essay traces a lifetime love of hiking. From her first trail at age five with her Uncle Mark, to exploring Sanders County, to a memorable trip to Glacier National Park with her mom.
