Some stories have a way of coming full circle.

This year, we’re excited to partner with Gifford Hirlinger, a family-owned estate winery in the Walla Walla Valley, for Pairings in the Pines.

What many people may not know is that owner and winemaker Mike Berghan grew up right here in Sandpoint. After graduating from Sandpoint High School, Mike found his way into vineyard work in California before returning to the Northwest and planting his first vineyard in Walla Walla in 2001.

More than two decades later, Mike and his wife Melissa continue to farm their estate vineyard and produce wines with character, depth, texture, and a true sense of place.

As you make your way along the Crooked Tree Trail at Pine Street Woods, you’ll enjoy a selection of thoughtfully chosen Gifford Hirlinger wines paired with locally crafted bites from some of our region’s favorite food partners.

Flight times are beginning to fill, and availability is becoming more limited. If Pairings in the Pines has been on your summer calendar, now is a great time to reserve your spot.

Join us July 9 for an evening of great food, exceptional wine, and community beneath the pines.

Tickets available at kaniksu.org or link in bio.

Last week, sixth graders from across the Priest River area stepped into the forest for a day of hands-on learning, exploration, and connection during the annual Priest Community Forest Connection Forest Expo.

This year marked a meaningful milestone as the 20-year tradition was organized for the first time under Kaniksu Land Trust’s education program leadership.

Designed for students from schools across West Bonner County and Newport School District, the Forest Expo helps young people deepen their understanding of forest ecosystems, conservation, stewardship, and the landscapes that shape life in the Kaniksu Region.

Throughout the day, students rotated through 10 interactive learning stations focused on topics like wildfire, hydrology, fisheries, recreation, forest products, tree planting, habitat restoration, and land stewardship.

Local professionals, longtime volunteers, tribal partners, conservation leaders, and forestry experts shared real-world knowledge and experiences that brought each lesson to life.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of the day was something harder to measure.

Moments like these help young people build a relationship with the natural world around them. They create curiosity, connection, and a deeper understanding of what it means to care for forests, waterways, wildlife, and community for generations to come.

We’re deeply grateful to the educators, volunteers, partners, and organizations whose dedication continues to make this experience possible year after year.

Something pretty special has been happening at Pine Street Woods. 🐾

Over the past several months, Michele from Better Together Animal Alliance has been taking adoptable shelter dogs out for walks on the trails at Pine Street Woods.

She sends us a photo from their walk, we share the photos in our IG stories, and together we help these pups get a little more visibility while they wait for their people.

And now sweet little Spud (pictured first) has officially been adopted.

Which means every dog we’ve featured so far has found a home.

Every single one.

We’re so grateful to Michele, , and this incredible community for showing up with so much kindness and support.

And now it’s Ryker’s turn. 🤎

Ryker is just over one year old and, according to Michele, “really, really sweet.” It took him a minute to trust at first, but once he did, the two of them were off to Pine Street Woods for an adventure.

When they arrived to Pine Street Woods, Ryker sat in the car for a little while, taking it all in with his big beautiful eyes. Then you could see the exact moment he found the courage to jump out and give the trails a chance.

And once he did? He absolutely loved it.

Pay special attention to the last photo because that handsome boy is Ryker, and he’s currently looking for his forever home. 🐾

Join us tonight!

From 5–7 PM at Aster Garden Center,
we’re opening the doors for a simple Aster After Hours, a chance to slow down, connect, and be together.

There will be a donation station, a few nibbles and drinks, and sweet discounts if you mention “Live Give 7B”.

Every purchase, every gift it all supports this work. Mostly, it’s just a chance to be part of something that belongs to all of us.
There’s a reason this place still feels the way it does. Not just because of the land
but because of the people who care about it.

Over time, this community has quietly shown up.

Protecting what matters.

Investing in what lasts. Making sure these places are still here, for all of us.

That’s what this week is about. And it’s already happening. People are giving.
Showing up. Being part of something that matters.

And there’s still time to be part of it too.

Every gift is tripled.
Every dollar helps protect this place and everything it makes possible.

A child steps onto a trail for the first time
and something shifts.

They slow down.
They notice more.
They feel something they don’t have words for yet.
And sometimes they just take off in a fast dash full of joy.

That moment matters.

Because it’s often where connection begins to the outdoors, to this place,
to something bigger than themselves.
And that kind of connection doesn’t just happen.

It’s made possible by protected land, by access, by programs that bring people into these spaces.

That’s the impact of this work.
Not just preserving land but making sure people can access it, experience it, and build a connection that lasts. Because when someone feels connected to a place, they’re far more likely to care about protecting it.

And right now, you can be part of that.
Every gift is tripled.
Every dollar helps create more of these moments.

Happy Earth Day 💚

Today, we celebrate the land that shapes this place we love—and the people who care for it. From conserving working forests and wildlife habitat to getting kids outside and building spaces where community can thrive, this work is only possible because of you.

Thank you for walking the trails, planting native species, supporting local conservation, and showing up for the lands and people of the Kaniksu region. We’re grateful to be doing this work alongside you—today, tomorrow, and forever.

Conservation is about more than protecting land. It’s about protecting the character of this place and building strong relationships between people, place, and purpose.
That belief came to life this year with our acquisition of Aster Garden Center. More than a plant nursery, it’s a place for neighbors to gather, learn, and care for the land together. It extends our work by bringing rewilding from schoolyards into backyards and beyond.
This effort has been shaped from the start by partners like you. As the year comes to a close, consider making an end-of-year gift to help this work continue to grow (link in stories).
Here’s to planting seeds that will flourish for years to come.
