Before swings and slides, there was the African village square. In this space, African children learned community, movement, and belonging under the watch of elders and in the company of their peers - between storytelling and play. What did play look like in your childhood community? Tell us in the comments section where you played growing up.

When midwives are by women's side through pregnancy and birth, health outcomes improve & women are happier with their care. They are more likely to have:

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป Positive birth experiences
๐Ÿ’• More natural births
โœ‚๏ธ Fewer medical interventions

To improve the health of mums & babies, WHO urges countries to invest in lifesaving midwifery models of care.

Head on to Zoom on Friday, February 20, as AHAN director addresses these subjects. Are there questions you'd like addressed in the talk or related subjects that you'd like to learn about? Please drop them in the comments. Care to share the ways that religious beliefs shape your health-seeking behaviors, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

One of the points that was made on Tuesday's radio talk show on Lagos Talks 91.3 FM concerned the need for African medical infrastructure to invest more in developing local/traditional pharmaceuticals. Please share your thoughts in the comments section on what shape this development might take as well as instances in your own communities of how "traditional" medicine is being incorporated into health care and heath-seeking.

The radio conversation notably drew listeners' attention to a quote by a British official in Nigeria in the famous report, An African Survey (1938), admonishing his colleagues against dismissing all of traditional medicine as "juju", arguing that western pharmaceuticals had gained and will continue to gain a lot from effective African herbs, including the traditional treatment for tetanus. African Survey became the operational "bible' in Nigeria and elsewhere as herbs and other herbal mixtures were taken or confiscated and sent off to Europe where the active properties in the herbs and mixtures were identified and commercialized into tablets. Share your thoughts on how African/diasporic communities can explore their natural pharmaceutical resources for their own benefits and on their own terms.
