Astronaut Buzz Aldrin was a Freemason (a member of Clear Lake Lodge No. 1417 in Texas). When he walked on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, he carried a special Masonic flag with him and later presented it to his Grand Lodge. Several other Apollo astronauts were also Masons, and Masonic flags or emblems have made it to both the North and South Poles as well.

The word “Freemason” predates the modern Masonic fraternity. Medieval records used terms such as freemason or free-mason for skilled stonemasons who worked with “freestone”—stone that could be freely cut and shaped.
Over time, the operative craft of stoneworking evolved into speculative Freemasonry, where the tools of the stonemason became symbols for moral and personal development.

In the early 1800s, a Masonic lodge near the U.S.-Canada border operated out of a building that literally straddled the international boundary.
Lively Stone Lodge (founded around 1803 in the Derby Line, Vermont / Stanstead, Quebec area) met in a structure with entrances on both the American and Canadian sides. Members from both countries could attend without formally crossing the border. After the War of 1812 complicated cross-border gatherings, the Canadian brethren formed Golden Rule Lodge (still active today as Golden Rule Lodge No. 5 in Stanstead, Quebec), which continues distinctive traditions such as an annual outdoor meeting on the summit of Owl’s Head Mountain
