We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our September Access 2 Waves Adaptive Surf Camp and pivot toward an alternative adaptive event in San Diego’s South Bay.

While we recognize the severe environmental, health and economic impacts of the Tijuana River sewage crisis, we also want to highlight another consequence: the loss of access to life-changing social and recreational programs.

For people with disabilities, moving a program to another beach is not simple. Accessible beaches are limited, and beaches suitable for adaptive water programs are even more limited.

What good is a barrier-free beach if the water itself becomes the barrier?

South Bay families deserve clean, safe and accessible beaches.

The Gurmilan Foundation will be joining advocacy efforts moving forward, while continuing to create opportunities for the community we serve.

We hope to share details on an alternative adaptive event soon.

Clean water is an accessibility issue.

Adaptive Surf Camp Update 🌊

We know many of you have been asking about our next Adaptive Surf Camp, and we’re excited to share that planning is underway!

Before opening registration, we are currently evaluating the best location for this year’s event. Recent water-quality concerns at Coronado have prompted us to explore alternative beaches to make sure we provide the safest and best possible experience for our participants, volunteers and families.

Our goal remains to hold the camp on September 26, and we hope to announce the location and open registration very soon.

Thank you for your patience and for continuing to support Access 2 Waves and the Gurmilan Foundation. 💙🌊

Stay tuned — more information coming soon.

Thirty-six years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act changed our nation by affirming that people with disabilities deserve equal rights, equal access, and equal opportunity.

The ADA opened doors to employment, education, transportation, businesses, and public spaces—but accessibility is about more than ramps. It’s about creating communities where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive.

While we’ve made tremendous progress, our work isn’t finished. Every accessible entrance, captioned video, inclusive workplace, and barrier removed brings us one step closer to a world where everyone belongs.

This ADA Anniversary, take a moment to learn about the law, notice the barriers that still exist, and be part of the solution.

Accessibility benefits everyone.

🎉 Happy 36th Anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act!
