What We Learned from Our Trip to Washington, D.C.
Standing before the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, with Jefferson’s and Franklin’s handwritten edits, I saw how diverse voices and even complaints, when met with compassion and action, can forge something greater.
Zeus’s cousin Angie - a senior research librarian at the Library of Congress - gently reminded me that what I once called “whining” was often the honest voicing of real pain—the very frustrations that sparked a nation built on solving problems and offering freedom and opportunity for all. Democracy, like true ministry, requires listening, compromise, compassion, and above all, love.
In the midst of heat, schedule changes, and unexpected delays, we watched Americans from every background—speaking Chinese, Tagalog, German, Russian, Arabic, and more—still proudly wearing red, white, and blue. Most chose grace over complaint, problem-solving over despair. It was a beautiful picture of unity in diversity.
This trip stirred my heart for the work the Lord has given us at Amazing Grace Maritime Missions. Just as our founding fathers sought to form “one” out of many, we unite U.S. churches with our Mexican partners to bring Christ-centered hope to vulnerable coastal communities. Out of many voices, needs, and backgrounds, we become one in Christ—delivering holistic transformation (physical, spiritual, emotional, and social) by land and by sea.
No matter where we serve—whether in the halls of history or the remote villages of the Sea of Cortez—God calls us to listen with compassion, act with love, and stand together as His people.
