Las Gallinas Lions Club

Las Gallinas Lions Club The Las Gallinas Lions Club is a service organization that has been serving the Marinwood and Terra Linda communities in San Rafael, CA since 1980.

The Las Gallinas Lions Club was founded in 1980 by local resident Les Mize. Les had been a Mill Valley Lion since 1965. He moved to Marinwood in 1969 and came to the conclusion that a Lions Club in the Marinwood area would be a great neighborhood asset for the residents of Marinwood and Lucas Valley. With the passage of California’s Proposition 13 in 1978, the Marinwood Community Services District

had to drastically reduce its services, eliminating many of its recreational and children’s programs. Les realized that a new Lions Club could help fill this void by resurrecting cancelled programs and activities. On March 18, 1980, the Las Gallinas Lions Club was formed. The new club included 44 local, community minded individuals who embraced the Lion’s motto, “WE SERVE.” Les Mize became our first club president. Our name, Las Gallinas, was selected by the charter members to reflect the geographical valley running from Puerto Suello Hill in the south to the southern limits of Novato. The main road traversing this valley is Las Gallinas Avenue. Our first community projects were resurrecting the annual Marinwood Easter Egg Hunt and starting a Halloween Parade and Costume Contest for neighborhood children. This established our long-standing commitment to our neighborhood’s young people. As we continued to grow, our club added many community activities and programs. We also raised money by conducting parking services for the Marin County Fair. This money continues to be returned to the community in the form of assistance grants for local groups and Lions International programs.

📣🦁 We are incredibly honored to have been recognized as a Community Partner at the 2026 Golden Bell Awards Ceremony — an inspiring annual event celebrating excellence in education throughout Marin County at every level and in every capacity.

We are especially proud to be recognized for our partnership with the Miller Creek School District and our ongoing commitment to serving local students and families through our annual vision screening program. Helping remove obstacles to learning and supporting the confidence and success of young people is deeply meaningful to our club and reflects the Lions motto we have carried proudly since 1980: “We Serve.”

From the awards program:

“The Lions Club is an important and valued aspect to our school community. Volunteers show up with kindness, care, generosity, and a sense of service to offer an annual vision screening for students to help increase confidence and remove potential learning obstacles. Thank you!”

A heartfelt thank you to the Marin County Office of Education for this recognition and for hosting such a wonderful celebration of educators, students, volunteers, and community organizations making a difference across Marin County.

We also want to thank all of our fellow Lions who turned out for the event and proudly walked across the stage in a sea of gold vests to receive the bell. Your dedication, generosity, and decades of service are what make this club so special.

From our founding in 1980 to today, the Las Gallinas Lions Club has remained committed to supporting our community — especially its young people — and we are grateful to continue that tradition of service for generations to come.
