Our efforts improve each step of the agricultural value chain. We introduce farmers to new methods and technology, improve export marketing techniques, and create strategies for ramping up food exports to lucrative overseas markets. As a result, we have helped export nearly 160,000 metric tons of fruits, nuts, and spices valued at more than $350 million to international markets, impacting more than one million farmers and families.

I am a trainer in the Roots of Peace kitchen garden program.

We trained 200 needy unemployed women to help them become self-sufficient.

Even though most of these women are illiterate, they have gardens and raise livestock.

They told us that this was the first time that anyone has held a workshop for them in this village.

They were so happy we did this.
We were so happy we could help.

Most of the women in this region suffer from anemia.

Women and children do not have enough food for proper nutrition.

Mothers die during childbirth because they do not have enough money to eat or buy medicine.

Though I am a health worker at the clinic, I recommend kitchen gardening to the women who come here.

They can plant seeds in their yards and improve their health by eating more vegetables. They can use the surplus to make jams and pickles.

This leads to not only better health but empowerment.

We had land to cultivate, but we couldn’t afford the seeds.

But now Roots of Peace is here. You have provided us with seeds so that we can grow our own food and sell the rest in the market. It can feed my children and become a source of income.

The more we grow, the better we are.

I find farming easy.
I know we can do this!

You see all these women here? They are all widows, and many are sick.

This year, though there was plenty of water and many had a small amount of land - no one could grow wheat, potatoes, onions, and other vegetables because they could not afford to buy seed.

This aid from Roots of Peace - these seeds and training - give us food for our families and the rest we can sell to buy medicines.

Thank you for teaching us to farm - to feed ourselves and sell the rest.
You are the first to come to this village to help.

We are a large family.

I used to buy tomatoes from the bazaar, but now I can cultivate, harvest, and use tomatoes from my own garden.

I can dry some of it for winter and sell the extra at the market.
With that money I can buy things that I need.

Before, I did anything to make a living so that my children wouldn't die of hunger.

Now that I am cultivating in my garden, I am so very happy.

“If your planting is good, you will have a very good harvest next year.

How long should we wait for help from other countries?
If we just wait for others to help us, our life will not progress.

When you harvest, eat some of it and sell the rest in the market.

You can pay for your children's education and buy necessities from this money and become self-sufficient.

We must think about the future of our children.
Why should they always become refugees in other countries?"

My name is Siddiqa and I train women how to plant, irrigate, and harvest vegetables right out of their own kitchen garden.

Today I trained 20 women and we distributed kitchen gardening packages including tomato plants, two types of fertilizers, baskets, and shovels to each woman.

Tomatoes are very useful.

Our people eat tomatoes a lot and the cultivation of this plant increases the economy of our country.

I was unemployed for a long time and sat idly at home.

When I found this job teaching women, I felt the blood flow in my veins again.

At first I could not speak because of the grief in my throat.

I asked the ladies to give me a few minutes to see if they are real or not.

After I was sure, I started the lesson.

I feel very happy.
I found motivation and hope again.
I became alive and awoke from hibernation.

When we learn something and teach others, we naturally feel happy and at peace.

When I taught women, I felt alive and was very happy that I am useful for others.

I want all women to have a job so that they can be happy and feel alive.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture and have worked in kitchen gardening for 7 years.

We identified 150 underprivileged women and trained them in kitchen gardening.

We divided these women into groups of 25 and gave them theoretical and practical training on how to cultivate and harvest.

The women knew the traditional methods that they learned from their fathers.

But we trained them in the modern way of farming in rows, and how to irrigate their plants.

And we taught them how to use fertilizer in exact amounts so that the vegetables do not spoil.
