Marin Center for Independent Living A disability non-profit organization promoting independence for people with disabilities.

The Marin Center for Independent Living (MCIL) was organized by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1979, following the world-changing movement for disability rights begun next door in Berkeley, CA in the 1960s. Independent Living history:
In the 1960s, Ed Roberts and several other quadriplegic students gained admission to the University of California Berkeley, began advocating for their rights and building disability community, and the first curb cuts and ramps were born. In 1972 the first Center for Independent Living was founded by disability activists, led by Ed Roberts, in Berkeley. Ed Roberts went on to lead the Department of Rehabilitation in Sacramento, and Independent Living Centers began to proliferate from coast to coast. In California, twenty-eight counties have Independent Living Centers that are united in the powerful statewide organization, the California Foundation of Independent Living Centers. All of this was the precursor to the passage, a little over a decade later, of one of the most important pieces of social legislation in the history of the United States: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

It was a night of pure "Moonlight and Magic" at the annual Stepping Out Gala this past Saturday!

As an Independent Living Navigator at the Marin Center for Independent Living and Matrix Parent Network, I had the honor of attending this beautiful event at the Marin Civic Center with our wonderful client, Deanna King. The highlight of the evening was a breathtaking fashion show featuring courageous breast cancer survivors as models—radiating strength, beauty, and hope in front of over 500 supportive doctors, providers, and donors.
As a survivor myself, seeing that runway filled with joy reminds me exactly why our Mary Matthews Breast Cancer Project matters so much. We are deeply grateful to the To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation for the annual grant that makes our work possible, allowing us to help underserved individuals in active treatment pay for critical needs like rent, mortgages, and health insurance. Thank you to everyone who made this sparkly, magical evening unforgettable! - Kelly Tyler

MCIL is deeply honored and humbled to receive the 2026 Nancy Martin Outstanding Nonprofit Award at the Marin County Senior Fair today. Thank you very much!

We had a great time corraling folks over to our sarsaparilla saloon and a chance to talk with them about the many services we provide to older adults and disabled persons so they can be independent in their homes and communities of their choosing.

Please consider joining MCIL with a contribution to the Inclusive Playground, donation link in the comments.

The playground, planned for McInnis Park, is expected to accommodate children and families with a range of requirements, said Ted Jackson, chief executive officer of the Marin Center for Independent Living. It will be “a place where every child and family, regardless of disability status, age, ability, mobility or sensory need, can play, explore and connect,” he said.

The project’s intergenerational aspect “ensures that parents with disabilities and older adults will have an accessible experience when they bring their children and grandchildren to play,” he said.

The matching funds by the Marin Center for Independent Living support a $6 million plan to create the amenity in San Rafael.
