WFTC SYMPOSIUM CULMINATES IN DEVELOPMENT OF GENOA MANIFESTO
Therapeutic Community (TC) leaders, researchers, and practitioners from across the globe recently convened in Genoa, Italy, for the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities (WFTC) 2026 Symposium, a landmark gathering dedicated to advancing the role of TCs in addressing addiction and related behavioral health challenges. Over three days of presentations, dialogue, and collaboration, participants reflected on the rich history of the TC movement, examined contemporary challenges and innovations, and explored opportunities to strengthen recovery-oriented systems of care worldwide.

The Symposium culminated in the development of the Genoa Manifesto, a consensus document that articulates a shared vision for the significance and future of TCs. Drawing upon the collective expertise and experience of international stakeholders, the Genoa Manifesto reaffirms the enduring value of community-based, person-centered approaches to recovery and is intended to serve as a guiding framework for future WFTC initiatives and for TC organizations around the world.

The significance of the Genoa Manifesto extends beyond the Symposium itself, providing a unified roadmap to strengthen recovery outcomes, expand access to effective treatment, and ensure that TCs continue to evolve in response to emerging needs while remaining grounded in their core principles of healing, personal growth, community, purpose, and social reintegration.

The Genoa Manifesto is currently undergoing translation into multiple languages; WFTC will be pleased to make it publicly available in the near future.
