🤩 Are you feeling more elephant seal or sea lion today?
🧠 Here are a few key differences between these species that you can see in this photo: Sea lions have ear flaps and can "walk" on their front flippers on land. Elephant seals are "true seals" (ear holes) and flop on their bellies.

🐋 Whale disentanglement training with the Marine Mammal Care Center Response Team and our partners:

When an entangled whale is reported in LA County, our Response Team answers the call. Migratory whales foraging along the Southern California coast can become caught in fishing lines and gear, and once entangled, the gear can tighten, twist, and attach to their bodies. These powerful animals can survive for months or even years while gear slowly affects their ability to navigate, dive, forage, and reproduce.

When we get the call, we work with federal agencies and partners to collect data, capture GoPro footage, deploy GPS tracking equipment, and remove the gear, all to better understand entanglements and help prevent them in the future.

💙 Thank you to our partners: LA County Fire/Lifeguard Division, SoCal Whale Watch, EWROC, and NOAA Marine Mammal Stranding Network Coordinators!
