It was a great week of learning, fellowship, and making memories. I had the opportunity to meet some new friends from Vermont, reconnect with old friends, and share some great times with Marines and League members from across the country.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to Indianapolis. Thank you for the hospitality and the memories!

What a great experience here in Indianapolis, Indiana! Today was the final day of the 2026 Marine Corps League National Convention, and we had the honor of installing our new officers.

We have the banquet later tonight, but this officially wraps up an incredible convention. It’s been a great opportunity to learn, connect with fellow Marines, and continue carrying on the traditions and values of the Marine Corps League.

Proud to represent The Big Stick Detachment and grateful for everyone who made this convention such a memorable experience.

Senior Vice Commandant Rudy Duarte did a flawless job running the meeting, and we had the opportunity to recognize two of our valued donors, Rain for Rent and Envent, with awards for their continued support of our Detachment.

We also recognized several of our members with certificates. It’s always important to take the time to recognize the people who continue to support our Detachment and help keep the traditions of the Marine Corps alive. 🦅⚔️

🇺🇸🦅 Honoring an Eagle Scout & Giving Back to Our Community 🦅🇺🇸

Today, The Big Stick Detachment 1496, of The Marine Corps League, had the great honor of presenting awards to an outstanding Eagle Scout from Troop 613 in Long Beach.

The ceremony was held at Temple Beth Shalom in Long Beach, where we presented the Scout with the Good Citizenship Award, along with a Commandant’s Commendation from Marine Corps Commandant General Eric M. Smith.

We also had the privilege of presenting an American Spirit Award to the Scout’s parents in recognition of their support, dedication, and commitment throughout his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout.

Representing the Big Stick Detachment were Commandant Luis Gallegos and Senior Vice Commandant Rudy Duarte.

It is always a great honor to be invited to these special ceremonies and to have the opportunity to recognize our community’s outstanding young men and women. The Marine Corps League is proud to continue supporting our youth, honoring their accomplishments, and giving back to the community we proudly serve.

Congratulations, Eagle Scout! Semper Fi! 🇺🇸🦅

The Big Stick Detachment 1496 took care of business tonight! 🇺🇸🦅

Another productive meeting is in the books. We reviewed the key takeaways from the Marine Corps League Department of California Convention in Elk Grove, including important bylaw updates, recruiting strategies, and information that will help strengthen our detachment moving forward.

We also began preparations for our Toys for Tots campaign by working on securing our event date and making plans to continue serving our community during the holiday season.

A special thank you to our Department of California Judge Advocate, Alfred Paniagua, for presenting updates on state bylaws and discussing the possibility of operating a fireworks stand as a future fundraising opportunity. We look forward to exploring this idea and appreciate his guidance throughout the process.

Our members were also recognized for the outstanding job The Big Stick Detachment did running a 3rd successful Fleet Week 2026. It was an honor to once again support our active-duty military, first responders, and the crew of the USS Iowa. Thank you to every volunteer who helped make it another successful event.

This weekend, we also hosted a Growl with Inland Empire Wardogs pound 413 aboard the battleship. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the MODD (Military Order of the Devil Dogs), build camaraderie, and explore ways we may become more involved in the future. The Big Stick is building relationships and not just talking about!

Semper Fidelis. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we’re just getting started.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Marine Corps League Department of California State Convention in Elk Grove, California!

What a great few days in a beautiful city representing the Big Stick Detachment 1496. The convention gave us the opportunity to review and vote on bylaw changes, elect new Department of California officers, and collaborate with Marines from detachments across the state.

It was also a tremendous honor to have the National Commandant attend our convention. It’s not often that a National Commandant takes the time to attend a state convention, so having the opportunity to hear from him and spend time with our national leadership made this year’s convention even more special.

One of the best parts of the weekend was sharing the story of the Big Stick Detachment, building relationships with fellow Commandants and members from across California, and exploring new ideas and opportunities that will help our detachment continue to grow and better serve veterans and our communities.

Every convention is an opportunity to learn, lead, and bring back valuable knowledge to strengthen our detachment. I’m excited to put what we learned into action.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 California State Convention. Until next year Semper Fidelis! 🇺🇸🦅🌎

The Big Stick Detachment 1496 Outstanding Meeting and Recognition Night

What a fantastic meeting tonight at the Marine Corps League Big Stick Detachment 1496!

We took time to recognize and congratulate all of the members who participated in Fleet Week and contributed to its tremendous success. From operating the Field Mess to staffing the 10x10 booth, selling merchandise, recruiting new members, and representing the Marine Corps League with pride, our members put in countless hours of hard work and dedication. Your efforts did not go unnoticed, and Fleet Week was a success because of you.

A special thank you goes to Chemco for their generous donation of a pair of Angels game tickets, which were awarded to our top Fleet Week performers Your support of veterans and the Marine Corps League is greatly appreciated.

We were also honored to welcome Marcus Flores, who traveled all the way from Oklahoma and is a member of Detachment 857. Marcus served with the original MARDET aboard the USS Iowa (BB-61) from October 1986 to October 1988. In recognition of his service and dedication, we presented him with a commemorative framed tribute and an Iowa Marine Corps hat. It was truly an honor to have him visit, and we hope he enjoyed spending time with our detachment.
We also recognized one of our hardest working members, Charles Malone, for his outstanding commitment during Fleet Week. Charles showed up and contributed all four days of the event, demonstrating the dedication and work ethic that make our organization strong. Outstanding job, Marine!

Another highlight of the evening was welcoming a new member into our ranks. Congratulations to Rene on being voted into the Marine Corps League as an Associate Member of the Big Stick Detachment. We are proud to have you join our growing family and look forward to your involvement and contributions to the detachment. Welcome aboard, Rene!

It was an evening filled with camaraderie, appreciation, and recognition of those who continue to serve veterans, their communities, and the Marine Corps League mission. We look forward to continued growth, stronger membership, and many more successful events ahead.
