Introduction to On-the-Water Leader Skills training (IOWLS) gives adult leaders an introduction to resources and on-the-water skills they need to assist Sea Scouts in achieving Ordinary rank. The material and training presented in Introduction to On-the-Water Leader Skills closely follows the Sea Scout Manual, the Guide to Safe Scouting, and the ANSI (Approved American National Standard) standards for on-water vessel activities and are meant to serve as an adult training outline. In addition, participants will be given access to lesson plans and support materials that will enable them or their youth to teach Apprentice and Ordinary advancement requirements.

Hidden beneath the tranquil waters of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland lies an eerie and unexpected sight — a massive shark statue that has intrigued divers and adventurers for over two decades. Measuring approximately 20 feet in length and constructed from fiberglass, this menacing figure sports a sinister grin that looks as if it were ripped from a deep-sea nightmare.

The statue was first discovered in 2002, startling divers who stumbled upon its unsettling presence at the lake’s bottom. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the shark was originally created as a prop for Choc au Lac!, a film produced by the local group La Jeunesse de la Côte. Though its cinematic debut may have been short-lived, the fiberglass beast found a lasting home in the depths of Neuchâtel, where it has since become a curious underwater landmark.

Despite its fearsome appearance, the statue poses no threat — except perhaps to the unsuspecting diver who isn’t aware of its existence. Over time, this submerged oddity has drawn thrill-seekers and scuba enthusiasts eager to see it up close. Its ghostly silhouette and toothy smile make for an unforgettable experience, adding an element of the surreal to an otherwise serene environment.

Today, the Lake Neuchâtel shark continues to inspire urban legends, Instagram posts, and a fair share of nervous laughter from those who dare to dive deep enough to meet it face-to-face.
