Digital Ocean uses the awesome power of digital storytelling to amplify the voices of those on the front lines of ocean sustainability. Humans have an unsustainable relationship with the ocean in so many different ways, from overfishing, plastic pollution, and destruction of coastal ecosystems, to the effects that climate change has on our oceans: sea level rise, acidification, and coral bleaching
(to name only a few). There is a lot of bad in this relationship, but there is also a lot of good: many governments and private citizens, NGOs and grassroots groups, academics and activists are working in their own ways to find solutions to these daunting challenges. We want to empower and help those who are working to change the status quo of ocean destruction to tell compelling stories about the challenges that they face and the solutions that they are working towards. At Digital Ocean, we believe that stories can inspire an audience to understand the problems that we have created for the oceans and to take action towards solutions. If we want to change the way that we as a society talk, think, and act towards our oceans, we have to start with stories that exemplify and advocate for a better type of the relationship. We are living in an age full digital stories that swirl around the Internet vying for our attention; yet among the tangle of stories and resources, many on the front lines of environmental research and advocacy still struggle to translate their research into an effective story. Digital Ocean aims to help ocean advocates tell better stories and along the way build a community that will help amplify ocean stories so that they can rise above the fray.
