Today, the Reyes family received devastating news. The Immigration Judge denied Gerardo's application for Cancellation of Removal.

This decision is heartbreaking—but it's not an accident. It's the result of a system designed to separate families while detention centers profit and politicians win votes on fear.

Across the country, immigrant families face the same reality: deep community ties, years of building lives here, and overwhelming support mean nothing to a system rigged to deport people regardless of their humanity.

The fight is NOT over.

Gerardo's legal team will immediately file an appeal and a Habeas Corpus petition. They're continuing to fight for his freedom and his right to remain with his family.

These next legal steps are urgent—and expensive. We're asking our community to keep standing with the Reyes family:

San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) Officer Jaciel Cortina, who provided false statements in a sworn affidavit related to the arrest of Gerardo Reyes Gonzalez, was placed on paid administrative leave.
The decision falls far short of accountability, as Gerardo Reyes remains detained in ICE custody and his family continues to face separation, financial instability, and emotional harm.
Gerardo is the primary provider for his family, including his disabled wife and children, and his continued detention is deeply impacting them.

Mano Amiga and community members are calling for:
• Immediate dismissal of all charges against Gerardo Reyes and Esteban Reyes
• Full, unredacted release of all body camera footage from every officer present
• Immediate release of Gerardo Reyes from ICE detention

Mano Amiga Action organized a community protest to stand against 287(g) and the collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE.

Antonio carries his father’s name but few memories with him because his family was torn apart by deportation. His father was a hard worker with a dream, someone who wanted to build a business, a family, a future. When he was deported, we didn’t just lose a loved one, we lost a contributing member of our community. Deportations don’t just hurt individuals, they tear apart families and weaken our entire community. Instead of wasting money on Operation Lone Star, the state should invest in community care for ALL Texans.

Earlier this year, we held a community submission contest where people shared their stories and art about immigration and incarceration. Now, we’re bringing those stories to you in an effort to challenge the dehumanizing narratives about our community members impacted by these systems. But we want to be clear: no one deserves to be deported.

Special thanks to Frontera Federation and Human Rights Watch for helping us stay informed and up to date on Operation Lone Star developments.

“Defenseless” wasn’t just a poem, it was a truth I lived. My court-appointed attorney never looked into my case, and that neglect cost me three years of my life. I wrote this piece to show how storytelling can shift public perspective, because when we share our stories, we expose the systems that silence us and protect the next person from the same pain. ✊🏽🖤
