ART AFTER DARK is this Friday, August 5th from 5-8 PM in downtown SLO!

Prime yourself for a fun evening with an artist talk and walkthrough of the newest SLO Museum of Art () exhibition at 4 PM! Enjoy the nearby Concerts in the Plaza event hosted by Downtown SLO () before making your to any one of the galleries or businesses showcasing artwork. Charcoal artist Sara Rianda will have her work on display at EDNA Contemporary (), and SLO Provisions is presenting the show “Within” by Christine Marie alongside wine pourings by Ulloa Cellars (). Cap the night off at Saints Barrel () to listen to their vinyl music set! Late summer festivities abound!

Please join us *tonight* Wednesday, August 3rd at 6 PM for our third and final installment of the Open Studios Art Tour workshop series. EDNA Contemporary () Gallery Director Sheryl Daane Chesnut will be providing visual artists with information about how to acquire gallery representation, and the presentation will be followed by a Q&A. ART AFTER DARK is this Friday from 5-8 PM! We will also have a kids’ coloring booth and information on the event series available at our table during Concerts in the Plaza! This month’s art walk features some favorites including a vinyl music set at Saints Barrel (); alongside some new venues including The Center Boutique () who will showcase artwork by Cecilia Furlong, an advocate for reproductive health, wellness, and accessibility. Books! We were so happy to invite student-run literary arts publication Hanging Lantern Review () to showcase their recently published edition featuring student writing and art. SLO Book Bike (), a queer-owned bike-powered bookstore, set up a display with their fantastically curated poetry catalog. Inside, Ginger Hendrix and Kevin Clark signed copies of their books!

Thank you to everyone who came together to make our event this past Sunday a success! We had a great time at “Personal Consecrations: A June Literary Evening” featuring County Poet Laureate, Kevin Clark, reading from his newest collection of poems THE CONSECRATIONS, and Ginger Hendrix reading from her hot-off-the-press memoir CHURCH GIRL IS A GAY. Ancient Peaks Winery () will be pouring at our reading this Sunday, which takes place at SLO Botanical Garden (). Ancient Peaks is a family-owned winery specializing in wines from Santa Margarita Vineyard in Paso Robles. They will have their 2020 Chardonnay, which was recently featured in Forbes () magazine. Come enjoy a glass of wine, listen to SLO County Poet Laureate Kevin Clark read from his latest book of poetry THE CONSECRATIONS; Ginger Hendrix will read from her hot-off-the-press memoir CHURCH GIRL IS GAY. Both authors will be signing books at the end of the evening, and Hanging Lantern Review (), a student-run literary journal, will be selling copies of their publication. We are celebrating our 24th year of Open Studios Art Tour this October! The Tour is a self-guided event that takes place throughout the county. Free to the public, fine artists and crafters open their studios to showcase their art and share their processes. Visitors use the catalog (pictured) to view participating studio locations while purchasing art and meeting the artists!

We are also excited to announce that this year’s catalog will be printed in collaboration with New Times. If you would like to purchase advertising space in the catalog, please email [email protected] to inquire about rates and availability.

The San Luis Obispo Arts Council is excited to announce a poetry and memoir reading by nationally published local writers Kevin Clark and Ginger Hendrix at 4:30 PM on Sunday, June 12th in the Indoor Pavilion of The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. The Garden is located at 3450 Dairy Creek Road, just off Hwy 1 across from Cuesta College. Parking is free and the suggested donation at the door is $10.

Both writers will be reading from new books that focus on personal moments that consecrate joy out of hardship and convert struggle into beauty. Sponsored by Native Trails, the reading is partnering with Templeton Performing Arts, Hanging Lantern Review, and The Botanical Garden. After the reading, there will be music while desserts and wine will be served. Both authors will sign their books, which will be for sale.

A resident of the county since 1988 and former Director of Creative Writing at Cal Poly, Clark is the current SLO County Poet Laureate and author of the captivating new volume of poems The Consecrations.

We hope to see you there!

ART AFTER DARK this Friday, June 2nd at 5 PM!

What’s on tap for this month’s event? SLO Provisions () will be offering wine tastings from Arianna Wines, plus snacks and specials, alongside detailed drawings on paper by James Deitze. Linnaea’s Cafe () is showcasing work by photographer Janet Allenspach, meanwhile photography by David Pascolla will be on display at HumanKind. Junkgirls () is offering custom stamping with Melissa James just in time for Father’s Day and Graduation. Hands Gallery () has invited Artist Ben Harvey to display his collection of home decor crafted with automotive parts; and DJ Mermaid and FJ Mano Gil will be spinning vinyl at Saints Barrel ()! Don’t miss the newest exhibition at SLO Museum of Art () “See and Missed” by Camille Hoffman, along with an opening reception for the Craftsmaker’s exhibition! SLO Gallery across the street has new sculptures by Barbara Sitar, and EDNA Contemporary will share work by local artist Chris Cuyler. Down the street, Odd Fellows Hall will open their doors with a group show!
