WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

Join us March 8th from 2 - 4 pm at Crows End Retreat Center! Thanks and
for helping make this happen!!

Do you also see a sustainable revolution and a return to the most natural; what is all around us??

We are coming back for my favorite wild food! Utilized around the world by native people for millennia (locally used by the Chumash) before agriculture was industrialized, the Mighty Oak is a tree crop for California that needs no water and is abundant to most Californians just out the window!

See how to utilize the abundant acorn resource and use it in gourmet food! Let's shape a new truly sustainable food system!

See you then!

Love,
BH

TREE CROPS (Part 6): secret ingredient (!!)

Jujubes
(Ziziphus jujuba)

Officially our secret ingredient for Green Chef next Saturday!! See the link in the bio to (1) RSVP or (2) view Jujube tree crop article!

Come to Green Chef on Saturday to experience jujubes used to it's culinary potential!!

More on these trees...

Domesticated in 9000 BCE in South Asia, we think of the jujube as a "desert apple," drought-tolerant, seriously heat-resistant, and cold-resistant, thriving in USDA zones 6 - 9. The tree loves the Central Valley heat in California, as well as temperate areas from the coastal West to the temperate Mid-West and Southern US.

Adapted to extremes, no temperature seems too high in summertime and winter dormancy allows it to survive temperatures to about -25Β° F. To properly fruit, a bit of summer water and around 100 to 150 chill-hours are required to set fruit (source: California Rare Fruit Growers).

Oak Meal with on Kea Island in Greece

I was lucky enough to spend a few days volunteering and learning from Marcie on the island here. Thanks so much for letting me tag along, despite the reduced crop from drought and complexities of life.

I am a believer. We will find a way to bring acorn food to California.

Video coming soon.

Also how sweet are these ancient terraces / swales holding water for the ithaburenthis oaks, native olives, wild pistachios, almonds, figs, and walnuts?

TREE CROPS (Part 5):

Chestnuts
(Castanea spp.)

NEW ARTICLE WITH SWEET VID (link in bio) to see an incredible and climate-analogous example of agroforestry and agroecology in Ardèche, France. An immersive experience in the chestnut harvest and the Castagnade festival!

California has the chance to replicate a strong and climate-appropriate agritourism industry in our foothills. After visiting Ardèche, as the leading region of chestnut production in France, I can attest to the magnificence of enormous, naturalized chestnut forests and the culture that still tends it after hundreds of years of cultivation.

Get some nuts people. In California, I highly recommend visiting and supporting the chestnut forest in the Santa Cruz mountains at Skyline Chestnuts.
