Hospice SLO County Hospice SLO County supports those coping with illness, death & grief through free support

At Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, we believe people should never have to face death, serious illness, or grief alone. This simple belief has motivated our staff and volunteers to serve our community for over 40 years. Since 1977, Hospice SLO County has depended on the generosity and time of volunteers to provide our free services to San Luis Obispo County residents who are living with life-thr

eatening or terminal illness, their families, and the bereaved. Hospices began as a volunteer grassroots movement and brought dying out of the back wards of hospitals into the light of a compassionate caring community. We continue to support:

* those living with a life threatening or terminal illness
* those grieving the loss of a loved one
* a crisis response team for the community
* community members wanting to explore end-of-life and quality of life issues

If you decide flowers are the right thing for you to send after all, you can make this more thoughtful than a standard arrangement. First, think about the person who died - is there a plant, flower, or color that reminds you of that person for any reason? If so, that may be a nice choice. If not, decide if you want to send flowers or a plant. The plant is something the family can keep, though not all families will want or appreciate that. Also consider if there is a flower you have found particularly comforting, maybe those would feel the same to the grieving family.

Over the last few weeks, we've shown ideas for the types of gifts you could provide a grieving family other than flowers. In the end though, what matters the most is the family knowing you remember their loved one as well and are there to offer your support.

Food is a common gesture sent instead of flowers (or in addition to flowers!), though we suggest it with caution. Be thoughtful about how, when, and what you bring if you decide to bring food. After experiencing a death, families are often overwhelmed with food receipts that may exceed their freezer space. If so, a gift of food may be much more appreciated a few weeks after the death than right away. A nice basket of non-perishable foods can be nice, especially snacks they can offer to people who stop by unexpectedly. A good standby if you really want to stick with food may be a gift card to a local restaurant or carry out. Another nice offer would be to grab their grocery list and go shopping for them.
