Safe housing shouldn’t depend on luck. 🏠
A 2020 investigation revealed major gaps in San Luis Obispo’s rental inspection program and not much has changed since than. This raised serious questions about how renters are being protected from unsafe living conditions and negligent landlords. When inspections fail, tenants are often left to deal with mold, broken utilities, unsafe structures, and unhealthy environments on their own.
Every renter deserves accountability, transparency, and a home that is safe to live in.
Read the full investigation to learn what’s happening in SLO and why stronger enforcement matters for our community. Then, speak up. Share this story, contact local officials, and advocate for stronger renter protections. Housing is a human right.

Three years of organizing, advocating, and building power for renters in SLO. Join us Friday, May 29 from 5 to 7 PM at Ancient Owl Beer Garden (3197 Duncan Rd A) to celebrate how far we’ve come and look ahead to the work still in front of us.

Elected officials, community organizers, renters, and allies are all welcome. Bring your family, bring your friends, and come ready to celebrate. This is our moment to reflect on where we started, honor the community that made it possible, and recommit to the road ahead.

We’d love to see you there. 🏠🍺

California's housing crisis demands bold action, and the Affordable California Bill Package delivers it. This legislative package would cap mobilehome park rent increases, extend eviction notice periods to give tenants more time, protect immigrant families from unjust evictions, and unlock billions for affordable housing construction and preservation. Call Senator John Laird at (805) 549-3784 and Assembly Member Dawn Addis at (805) 549-3001 to tell them SLO tenants support these bills. Housing is a human right. Let's fight for it together.

Join Tenants Together members on May 18 at 6 pm for a training on How to Research Landlords!

When we’re organizing tenants in a building, or multiple buildings, we need to know as much as we can about who the landlord is. Is the landlord a natural person? A corporation? What else do they own? Where are they located? What vulnerabilities might they have?

Seasoned researcher Alex Ferrer will present his best practices for researching landlords and how to know what information is most strategic for your campaign. Don’t miss it!

Stronger communities start with stable housing 🏘️When renters are supported, everyone benefits and fairness, safety, and unity follow. Make your vote count. ☑️

Renters make up 38–41% of households in SLO County… yet their needs are often overlooked. Supporting affordable housing means more than words: it means preventing evictions, ensuring stability, and planning for the future. 🏠🗳️

Join us Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. for an important General Meeting - and we mean it this time.

We're stepping back to look at the big picture: where SLOTU has been, where we're headed, and how we get there together. That means an honest SWOT analysis, revisiting our long, short, and immediate term goals, and laying the groundwork for a strategic planning process that keeps us focused and moving forward. If you've ever wanted a say in the direction of this union, this is the meeting to be at.

📍 Gala Pride & Diversity Center — 1060 Palm Street, SLO

When billionaires break every rule, it takes more than a rally to fight back. Rents are up, wages are flat, and too many politicians have chosen complicity over courage. We’re done waiting. Tomorrow, SLOTU member takes the mic to say what needs to be said.
Housing justice is worker justice. Renter power is worker power. May Day belongs to everyone who shows up, organizes, and refuses to accept the status quo — and that’s exactly what we’re doing tomorrow. Our existence is not a means of profit, and we won’t let anyone tell us otherwise.
Come stand with us. Not just against corporate greed and landlord power, but for the stable, safe community we know is possible. We are the courageous leaders we need. See you there.

Code enforcement isn’t just paperwork; it’s one of the only tools tenants have to push back when landlords ignore unsafe conditions.

If you’re dealing with mold, broken heaters, pests, or unsafe living conditions, you have the right to file a complaint — and you don’t have to do it alone.

Join us on May 25 at 5:30 PM at City Hall to learn how code enforcement works in SLO, what your rights are, and how we can collectively push for real accountability from landlords and the City.

Diana moved into her apartment and immediately found cockroaches.

She reported it. Followed up. Waited.

Months went by with little improvement, while the infestation continued and her family’s health suffered. Then came the eviction notice.

Stories like this aren’t rare. They’re part of a pattern where tenants who speak up about unsafe conditions are pushed out instead of being protected. Retaliation is illegal, but it still happens.

We need stronger protections, real enforcement, and collective action to make sure renters in SLO County can live safely without fear.
