The City currently has over 12,000 dogs, and recent approvals of large new developments will be adding 1,000 more. Most dogs need places to run and even though the City's General Plan calls out for such parks, the City has not yet provided one fenced off-leash dog park. Furthermore, if a dog is found off leash in a public place, such as a park, the dog owner can look forward to a $500 citation. Something has to change.
Our Mission
Friends of San Luis Obispo City Dog Parks, or SLODOGS, is a working group that will be working with the City of San Luis Obispo, and other interested parties, to provide safe, clean, off-leash dog parks. Once established, such parks will promote social and recreational opportunities for the citizens of the City San Luis Obispo and their dogs.
Our Goals
SLODOGS will strive to promote and provide educational programs that support responsible dog ownership and etiquette. Our initial goal is to help establish the City of San Luis Obispo's first safe, clean, fenced, off leash dog park. We will work with the City of San Luis Obispo, and other interested parties, to establish dog park locations and designs. It is likely that initial efforts for the first fenced dog park will be directed towards Laguna Lake Park. We expect to pursue fundraising and other financial opportunities to help offset dog park improvement costs. We expect to eventually develop a volunteer group to help the City maintain dog parks, once they are approved and developed.
Friend Us
Your input is encouraged. This is a new group and we are soliciting those that support the development of fenced, off-leash dog parks in the City of SLO.
We are in the process of developing information sheets/ brochures about SLODOGS as well as finding venues to best get the word out about the group and its mission. Fundraisers may be in the future to raise funds that would help the City offset the costs of dog park improvements.
