Happy Filipino American History Month! FAHM has huge history with the central coast, with the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental US right here in Morro Bay!

Celebrate and honor FAHM this month by supporting local Fil-Am businesses and pages and educate yourself on the traditions and culture. This weekend, come appreciate and have a taste of Filipino-inspired desserts and visit stephanie / happy friday 🇵🇭 at Slo Asian Market. 🍰🥧🍨

Monarch Books also has an incredible collection of Fil-Am stories and Filipino-inspired books in a plethora of genres as well as educational texts.

❗️✨Applications are OPEN for our AAPI SLO Board! 📣❗️

As a community organization, we at AAPI SLO are here to strengthen the existing AAPI community through unifying events and raise awareness of inequities on the Central Coast. We bring the Central Coast together with festivals, coffee chats, networking opportunities, and more. We showcase local AAPI-owned businesses as well as how strong the AAPI presence is here. We strive to educate and expose others to our culture and the joy it holds. We emphasize unity amongst all communities, as this is not an exclusive space, but a safe space for all.

As a board member, we require you be 30yrs of age or older, and must have resided in San Luis Obispo county for the past 5 or more years. It is preferred you are of AAPI descent/background, but we are open to all applicants. Board members are expected to commit 15-25 hours a month, attend at least 2 events a year, and commit to our board gift request. See more details at the application link in our bio.

❗️Big news… our cofounder, Mia Shin, has taken the next steps of her journey and has moved out of SLO.

🌟Mia Shin is our cofounder for a reason. She has been a light and leader within our community. She is the epitome of our mission statement: empowering others and celebrating the diversity within our cultures of the Asian community. Mia has worked tirelessly to strengthen our community, going to numerous clubs and orgs on the Central Coast to spread word of what we do and what we strive for. With her work, she has helped AAPI SLO gain recognition from several cities across the Central Coast and received high awards for her service. From leading the peaceful rally with fellow cofounder Kaela Lee and speaking to hundreds of people to Stop AAPI Hate to creating the safe space that AAPI SLO is today, Mia Shin is the perfect example of the strength and leadership an Asian woman can exemplify. Without her, we certainly would not be where we are today. AAPI SLO and the community here on the Central Coast extend our greatest appreciation to Mia and all she has done.

🌟 So what does this mean for AAPI SLO? Kaela Lee will continue as cofounder and Executive Director in supporting AAPI SLO and what it stands for. Mia will take a step back from Executive Director to a Board member, still guiding us in making pivotal decisions for the org’s future. Applications will open soon for new positions in our Board of AAPI SLO! Requirements will include an age limit of 30+ with proof of residency in SLO county for 5+ years. More details to come.

🌟And to Mia, we will miss you dearly, and we wish you the best on your next journey! Thank you for all that you have done and for being the person you are. ❤️

Who said Asians can't be cool? Join us at the Palm Theatre on the 24th, 7pm for a screening of Better Luck Tomorrow! Directed by Justin Lin, this Y2K movie made waves at Sundance because it showed Asians in a "negative light". The characters aren't nerds or just immigrants–they're getting into trouble and being risky. Diverse storytelling in the AAPI diaspora is important, and we're so excited to share this film with all of you!
