Smart Share Housing Solutions HomeShareSLO is now Smart Share Housing Solutions! A 501 (c) 3 non-profit. Program mission: changing lives, connecting people and homes.

HomeShareSLO is an affordable housing non-profit serving all of SLO County that facilitates matches between people with an extra room and those seeking a home. A growing number of senior households on fixed incomes brings need for new types of housing solutions. Renting extra bedrooms can bring in much-needed income and also provide companionship and a sense of security, especially for single seniors. Many who could benefit from the extra income and companionship find the process of finding an appropriate housemate difficult to navigate. The program assists by conducting extensive background screening of all applicants, verifies income, identity and references, and uses detailed lifestyle questionnaires to find compatible housemates. Once a match is agreed on, HomeShareSLO provides assistance with interviews, helps establish house rules and written agreements, and checks in with ongoing support throughout the life of the match. HomeShareSLO’s program addresses several key elements of the housing crunch in SLO County. By assisting isolated seniors and others to find appropriate housemates, their services help seniors age in place and enjoy better quality of life through socialization and improved income. Home providers may bring in $7,000 to $9,000 annually of additional income. At the same time, an affordable housing unit is created for a working person or senior who needs a safe place to live. Homesharing is a sustainable, cost-effective and community empowering choice that is currently being used successfully throughout the U.S. by more than 60 non-profits. HomeShareSLO is now facilitating matches and appreciates the opportunity to build safe housing through community partnerships and social connection. Please call (805) 215-5474 if you or anyone you know may have housing to share or seek shared housing. There are lots of different motivations for homesharing, but the most common are financial reasons. Some people have a large, empty home and a fixed income that makes it hard to keep up with maintenance, taxes, and/or mortgage payments. Some people can't pay the rent for a full apartment of their own, or would rather use the money in other ways. Check out this blog post and see the results of our survey about why people homeshare.

There are many good reasons to homeshare. Five common reasons are detailed below. • Financial. In today’s economy, both people who own homes and people who don’t are struggling to stay housed. Pooling resources in the form of shared housing reduces one of the biggest expenses in everyone’s b...

Open Door California is the largest statewide celebration of historic places in California, and Smart Share is proud to be a part of this annual event where enthusiasts of historic architecture, design, and cultural heritage can visit local gem, The Rosa Butron de Canet Adobe.

Built between 1845 and 1860, this SLO downtown treasure is not usually open to the public.

This Open House will also explore the women who once lived there, Mary Gail Black and Mildred Waterman. Visitors will also see the planned Waterman Village, an affordable tiny home community and a park that will honor stories by connecting preservation with future community use.

For the price of $20, you can explore all the historic sites participating in Doors Open CA this year. RSVP to the link in the comment.

The Waterman Village site by downtown San Luis Obispo hosts several fruit trees, including the extraordinary Mexicola Avocado, an exceptionally cold-hardy variety excellent for our climate and soil conditions. The fruit is ripening now. Help us propagate more of these trees for the community. We are looking for some volunteers to collect and sprout these avocado seeds.

The California Rare Fruit Growers Central Coast chapter will be on hand to demonstrate how to propagate the seeds and to share knowledge of this wonderful heritage variety (with its ties to the historic Rosa Butron Adobe).

This event is FREE and open to the public.

This past Wednesday, we hosted 14 people at our Homeshare 101 workshop. We are happy to share that we connected 3 people seeking housing with 3 people offering housing! 🏡

HomeShare SLO is a program run by Smart Share Housing Solutions. The program began in 2017 to connect people to each other--those who have an extra room to rent (Providers) and those who are looking for a room to rent (Seekers). 🏘

We were also joined by the Cal Poly Iter8 Club, who have been helping us update our website. At the event, they were able to test the accessibility of the new website format. Thank you, , for the outreach and website updates you have done for us! 💚

If you were not able to join us last week, join us tomorrow 5/19 6-8PM, at Odd Fellows Hall for a Co-Living Community Workshop. Find out more on our website: https://www.smartsharehousingsolutions.org/events

Come join our Smart Share Team on May 19th for a fun interactive design workshop to explore together how this can work on existing residential lots now.
