I want to express my gratitude to Pacific Wildlife Care and Claire (from SLO) for saving this beautiful red shoulder hawk!
When I was driving on LOVR this evening (right before Brookshire Farms), a few cars started slowing down and swerving. A car was on the side of the road and an injured bird was in the middle of the fast lane. I pulled over and ran out to help Claire stop traffic, so she could grab the hawk and bring it to safety.
While Claire kept the bird safe, I called PWC and spoke to a very kind volunteer named Rich. He said someone else had called to report the bird, but he was glad that we took it out of the roadway. Because Claire had her dog in the car, I brought the bird to their headquarters in MB.
The hawk was motionless for 20 minutes, so I was mentally preparing for the worst. As I pulled into PWC’s parking lot, the “sheet cave” that we formed to protect the hawk started to rustle. I swear, it must have known that it was arriving at a place that would take care of its injuries. I parked, called the front desk from my car, and noticed the hawk was about to escape from its “nest”. I snuck out of my car and let PWC know that the bird was not secure. Volunteers/staff promptly came out, secured the bird very quickly, and were INCREDIBLY kind. They informed me that the hawk’s ability to fly around my car was promising and they hoped for a full recovery.
We are so lucky to have this amazing animal rescue in our area! Thank you for all you do! 💙
