Project Foster

Project Foster Providing hope and support for Orange County’s foster children, one suitcase at a time The idea quickly snowballed from there, and Project Foster was born.

A Dana Point Women's Club Philanthropy

-

The concept for Project Foster (formerly, "My Own – A Case for Kids”) was born in December 2022, by founder Debby Thrailkill when she and her husband Joe decided to introduce their grandkids to a community service project - providing foster kids with much needed personal belongings. The family met at a local store and filled new rolling suitcases with es

sentials including clothing, hygiene items, pajamas, a pillowcase, blanket, books and a handwritten note of encouragement. The items were received with gratitude from Orange County’s Child and Family Services personnel, and with joy from the young recipients. After sharing the heartwarming story via social media, others decided to join in with their own families. Foster Children are typically removed from their homes at a moment’s notice and are handed a plastic trash bag to quickly collect their belongings. Often, because of the inherent trauma in the situation, they manage to bring very little with them. These children are often left to deal with traumatic separations with little dignity and hope. Now sponsored as the official philanthropy of the Dana Point Women's Club, Project Foster (formerly My Own – A Case for kids) has provided over 2,800 new rolling suitcases to foster youth in Orange County. Each suitcase provides vulnerable kids with belongings to call their own – clothing essentials, personal care items, sheets, a handmade pillowcase, a blanket, school supplies, books/toys and most importantly, hope. The program is currently expanding to serve children referred by school guidance counselors, social workers and homeless advocates. We welcome and would be extremely grateful for any monetary or item donation, all of which goes directly to the children.

(These are in addition to the many quilts and pillowcases these women have contributed over the years.) Thank you ! We sincerely love and appreciate you, and your gorgeous gifts bring comfort to so many children. 🙏
