Talon Ecological Research Group

Talon Ecological Research Group Talon Ecological Research Group is a 501c3 science-based non-profit organization with a mission to protect California’s native species and ecosystems.

We implement conservation and management actions for imperiled species and their habitat. Talon Ecological Research Group was founded in 2015 by like-minded individuals with the ambition of protecting imperiled wildlife species and their habitat in the greater San Francisco Bay area. Our focus is on avian species, including burrowing owls, tricolored blackbirds, and golden eagles. As part of our m

ission, we foster aspiring ecologists/biologists, thereby supporting the next generation of ecosystem stewards. We offer students and recent graduates the opportunity to get fieldwork experience, promoting adaptive management skills, problem solving abilities, and critical thinking.

At yesterday’s meeting, the California Fish and Game Commission unanimously voted to protect western burrowing owls as a candidate species under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA). Burrowing owls in California will be afforded CESA protection while the California Department of Fish and Wildlife conducts a status review. The species been eliminated from close to one-third of its historic range in California. In the San Francisco Bay area, it is dangerously close to extirpation.

Western burrowing owls are a covered species under the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Plan. The Habitat Agency is proud to be working with Talon Ecological Research Group and local partners on reintroduction efforts in Santa Clara Valley, with the goal of creating a self-sustaining population.

We are honored to be working with Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency, Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) , and others on reversing the declining trend of Burrowing Owls in the Bay Area and avoiding extirpation.

Burrowing owls are adorable and fascinating, but they're increasingly rare in the Bay Area. A promising new project gives them safe, private places to nest.

We will see you there!
