"How are you today dear? How is the pain?"
Those are the two questions that have followed me throughout the days of walking alongside her.
I still vividly remember the first time I met her around October 2024, at a small school in Cho Lau town, Binh Thuan province. She was sitting at the front desk, a wooden crutch leaning beside her. Her eyes were sparkling and deep black, yet filled with a gentle, lingering sadness. Her father had passed away, leaving her poor family behind, with her mother working tirelessly alone to provide for them. She was born with a cruel vascular malformation. As time went on, the disease worsened with complications, gnawing away at her frail body with continuous pain, sores, and inflammation, eventually forcing her to have one of her legs amputated. In that remote, impoverished countryside, the immense cost of medical treatment was something completely out of reach.
As if brought together by a fateful connection, she found us. In 2025, Goodsam Lotus Charity collaborated with the volunteer team in Singapore. Thanks to the generous support from Give Asia, we successfully arranged a trip to Singapore for her to undergo vascular surgery, planting the seed of hope for a life-changing future in this brave young girl.
However, fate continued to test her resilience. Nearly a year and a half passed; just when everything seemed peaceful, the condition flared up again relentlessly. Her pain grew more severe by the day, accompanied by constant bleeding and discharge. This past July, we had to rush her to Cho Ray Hospital for an urgent procedure to drain and clean the painfully infected, necrotic areas. The doctor choked back tears, explaining that this condition would stay with her for the rest of her life and could never be fully cured. She knew this—she understood better than anyone the agonizing pain she would have to endure—and yet, a resilient smile still bloomed on her face, bringing heartache to all of us.
During her month-long hospital stay, I frequently texted her words of encouragement. I simply wanted her to know that on this rugged path, she would never have to walk alone. There would always be open arms ready to support her, both spiritually and materially, giving her a shoulder to lean on and faith in life.
Today, she texted me: "Auntie, the doctor said I can go home now..." The doctor instructed that whenever the condition flares up or the pain becomes unbearable, she should return to the hospital to drain the fluid and ease the pain—a cycle that will repeat for the rest of her life. Hearing those words made my heart ache, yet her own mind was surprisingly at peace. She calmly accepted her adversity, expressed her gratitude to me and the charity, and shared some photos of herself in the hospital bed. She said:
"Auntie, please feel free to write about my story. While staying at Cho Ray, I saw so many people facing misfortunes just like mine, but they couldn't find financial support and had to leave the hospital while still in pain. I want you to share my story so that others out there know about your organization, so that those in pain might have a chance to find help and be as fortunate as I have been..."
Hearing these words from a young girl who has endured so much physical torment left me speechless. She not only remains strong through her own suffering, but her soul is also filled with profound empathy and compassion for others in similar plight.
This life is full of hardships, but amid all the misfortune, human kindness and understanding continue to shine. Stay strong and take care of your health, my dear. Please believe that there will always be many people who love you and are ready to walk beside you.
Our heartfelt thanks to all the donors and sponsors who have continuously joined hands with Goodsam Lotus Charity, allowing us to extend hope and bring light to the less fortunate lives in this world.
