Meet Steffon, an SJCC+CS alum. 🤝 Before joining The Corps in 2022, Steffon was working at a gas station, feeling uncertain about his future and hoping for something more meaningful. Looking for better pay, stable benefits, and a career path, he found the San Jose Conservation Corps. Steffon didn’t just go through our job training program; he immersed himself in the experience and maximized his corpsmember journey. 🎉

Steffon earned his high school diploma in 2023 through our Charter School, stepped up as a leader on the Corpsmember Council, and mastered field skills, operating various power tools. “Going through the Corps helped me get where I am today,” Steffon shares. “I found something I can be passionate about, and I enjoy coming to work every day.” That passion stemmed from the opportunity to work with The City of San José as a corpsmember Intern. After excelling during his internship, Steffon was hired in 2024 as a part-time Maintenance Assistant for a year. 🎉 His skills and resume continued to grow, making him the ideal candidate for the City’s Parks Division. Steffon earned a promotion and has been working as a full-time City employee for the past year. With his new position, he secured great benefits and financial stability and is on the career path he was searching for. 🥳

Today, Steffon continues to advance in his career. He is actively seeking new experiences within the City of San José and has a long-term goal of working as a Project Manager in City Hall. 👏 Steffon shows us that commitment to a goal can lead to great success. He encourages incoming corpsmembers to set their own goals, “show up every day, and put in the time.”

This month, 11 corpsmembers went on a five-day spike at Henry Coe State Park🌲 A "spike" refers to when a crew camps near a project site because a daily commute is not possible. They typically last around 7-10 days depending on the project. 🏕️

Our crew dedicated five days working on trails so they can remain safe and accessible to the public. They worked on fire fuel reduction, cutting down hazardous trees, trail vegetation and maintenance, and removing invasive weeds. 🤝
