What a beautiful day at the She is Beautiful Race in Santa Cruz! 🩵

Thanks to Irina, The Teal Foundation was able to join the vendor village alongside nearly 6,000 participants for a morning full of connection, awareness, and community.

Throughout the day, we met women who had participated in The Teal Run before, connected with others impacted by ovarian cancer, and shared information about Survivor Steps and this year’s Teal Run with so many new faces.

It was one of those days that perfectly reflected what this movement is all about — showing up for one another, sharing stories, and building hope together.

We’re honored to announce our Teal Run keynote speaker: Dr. Amer Karam of Stanford Medicine.

Dr. Karam has dedicated his career to advancing care for women facing ovarian and gynecologic cancers — combining innovation, research, and deeply compassionate care for patients and families.

As we come together this year under the theme “Powered by Community,” we’re grateful to welcome a speaker whose work reflects the power of connection, advocacy, and hope in the ovarian cancer community.

Join us on Sunday, September 20 for a day of movement, remembrance, and impact.

Today is World Ovarian Cancer Day. 🩵

We’re sharing five things everyone should know about ovarian cancer.

Because when more people understand the signs, the risks, and the realities of this disease, we’re stronger as a community and better able to support one another.

Mark your calendars! The Teal Run 2026 is set for Sunday, September 20th, and we can’t wait to see you there.

This year’s theme, Powered by Community, is a reflection of what makes this movement so meaningful. Every step, every story, and every person who shows up — survivors, families, friends, volunteers, and supporters — is what drives this work forward.

The Teal Run is more than a single day. It’s a community coming together to fund critical research, support those facing ovarian cancer, and create space for connection, healing, and hope.

The Teal Foundation helped support innovative research led by Dr. Daniel Heller at @ through Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance OCRA's Collaborative Research Development Grant.

Here is what that support is helping to advance:

The Problem: Ovarian cancer is often detected too late. Nearly 70% of cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, when outcomes are far more serious.

What They Built: Researchers created over 150 different nanosensors that react to molecules in the blood.

These sensors can:
• Detect differences between cancer and non-cancer samples
• Identify patterns linked to ovarian cancer

The system has already shown strong performance in earlier work:
• 87% sensitivity and 98% specificity for late-stage cancer detection

The Key Idea: Instead of looking for one marker (like CA125), this approach:
• Looks at many molecular interactions at once
• Uses AI to recognize patterns

This creates a more accurate “signature” of disease.

What They Achieved
• Built and optimized this new sensor technology
• Tested it on 600+ patient samples

• Identified sensors that can distinguish between:
– Ovarian cancer
– Other cancers
– Benign conditions

They also discovered that these sensors can capture important cancer-related proteins - which may become new biomarkers for earlier detection.

The Challenge:
Very few early-stage samples exist - because ovarian cancer is rarely caught early today.

Why This Matters:
This research is laying the groundwork for detecting ovarian cancer earlier, improving outcomes, and ultimately saving lives.

Save the date! On World Ovarian Cancer Day (May 8), a special evening in San Francisco will bring the community together to support ovarian cancer research.

Set atop Salesforce Tower, this one-of-a-kind gathering creates space to come together, to remember, to connect, and to take action. The evening will include panoramic views, shared experiences, and opportunities to give back in support of the work moving the field forward.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance OCRA (OCRA), helping expand access to earlier insight, prevention, and care.

The event is hosted by Jonathan Sockolosky in memory of his mother, Shelley Sockolosky, on the 10-year anniversary of her passing.

Take the Next Step: Free At-Home Genetic Testing

If you or someone in your family has a history of ovarian cancer, genetic testing may help provide important insight into hereditary cancer risk.

The Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance OCRA offers a free at-home genetic testing program for eligible individuals. The test screens for gene mutations such as BRCA1, BRCA2, Lynch syndrome, and other variants linked to hereditary cancers.

The process is simple: complete a short eligibility questionnaire, and if you qualify, a saliva test kit will be mailed directly to your home.

If genetic testing may be right for you, this program is an easy way to start.

Why genetic testing matters for ovarian cancer 🩵

Some ovarian cancers are linked to inherited gene changes — and knowing your genetic risk can help inform care, prevention, and family conversations.

Genetic testing looks for changes in genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2, which help repair damaged DNA. When these genes don’t work as they should, cancer risk can be higher. That’s why testing is part of personalized cancer care and prevention planning at places like Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Up to 22% of ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancers are linked to inherited gene mutations such as BRCA1/2.

For many, genetic testing isn’t just about answers, it’s about options. It can help guide screening, prevention decisions, and support conversations with loved ones who may also be affected.

Learning your risk can help shape what comes next.
