Martha's Kitchen At Martha's Kitchen, our mission is to feed the hungry with dignity. At Martha’s Kitchen we believe that food is a basic human right not a luxury.

Founder Louise Benson began this work out of her garage when she prepared and gave away peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the poor. Then in 1981, she and her friends started Martha’s Kitchen on the premises of the Sacred Heart Church serving hot meals. The kitchen was named after a biblical figure, Martha, who unfailingly offered hot meals to Jesus and his band of followers on their frequent

journeys through the community of Bethany. On a monthly basis Martha’s Kitchen provides nearly 100,000 meals and distributes 250,000 pounds of groceries each month. While San Jose has been our home for almost 40 years, we feel called to provide food security to as many communities as we possibly can. It is vital that these communities have access to well balanced meals, which include proper proteins, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Martha’s Kitchen has created a network of cooperating community based organizations who collaborate to help each other deliver the services for which they have the expertise.

A huge thank you to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their incredible generosity and support in the fight against food insecurity. As part of the church’s nationwide America250 celebration initiative — delivering 250 semi trucks of food to organizations in 250 cities across the country — Martha’s Kitchen was honored to receive 2,000 pounds of non-perishable goods during the San Jose delivery on May 21st.

We’re also grateful to Sunnyvale Community Services for coordinating the logistics and helping make this impactful distribution possible. Together, this partnership will help us continue providing nourishment and hope to families throughout our community.

Martha's Kitchen is excited to participate this year as an Energizer Station Host for Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition's Bike to Wherever Day on May 14th.

Get where you are going with a smile! By pledging to ride during Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition’s Bike to Wherever Days, you’ll be taking part in a premier regional event, supported by dozens of bike clubs, civic groups, businesses and organizations.
