Our mission is to actively facilitate and support the humane treatment of feral cat colonies. This will include participating in Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) of feral cats, seeking medical attention for cats that are ill or hurt, setting up feeding stations for anyone willing to feed a colony on a daily basis, trapping kittens and finding foster homes to socialize them and training others to do the same.

Last night, Ginny and I met with a fantastic group of neighbors from one of our past project areas. True to our pledge, we never abandon a colony we’ve worked with, so when they reached out, we jumped in to help.

Five homeowners are teaming up to catalog the estimated 25+ cats roaming their yards. We’ve delivered traps to start trap training in the three most active areas. Since local feeders may be reluctant to join in, we'll let the irresistible smell of Fancy Feast fish and shrimp in those traps do the talking!

Instead of expecting a rescue to magically "fix" the issue, these residents are rolling up their sleeves and taking ownership. This is community led TNR in action.

While we wish the local shelter provided free or low-cost appointments for efforts like this, Gatos de la Noche is stepping in to cover the costs at Nine Lives Foundation with help from
neighbor contributions.

This is a model that can be replicated in areas where the community is willing to pitch in. Unfortunately, there are not enough appointments and SJACC continues to do a scattershot approach to community cat management. From the sheer avalanche of cats in the streets right now, it is obvious that what they are doing is not working.

This beautiful boy showed up at the farm recently and looks to be about 6 months old. He hangs around with his buddy Cheddar, who we know was once someone's pet, he was wearing an AirTag when he first found our feeding station. Unfortunately, by the time we got Cheddar trapped and neutered, he had lost the AirTag. We couldn't locate his owners, and he remains very skittish. We love that these two are bonded. Cheddar seems to be watching over this kitten.

Time to get him neutered and vaccinated. These cats are cared for everyday by our fantastic volunteers! We are grateful. ❤ 🐾

City of San Jose Animal Care & Services, what are you doing??

Our trapper got in line this morning at 5:15 AM, and she was already 23rd in line! Intake quickly hit their 30 cat limit and started handing out vouchers for tomorrow's 25 appointments. Our trapper managed to get the very last voucher. Because she was there supporting a community member who was parked two cars behind her, she asked if her voucher could go to that community member instead. They allowed it, but there were still at least 15 cars behind her that were completely turned away and told they were out of luck. I guess all those cats will end up back on the streets and become nearly impossible to retrap!

And here is the capper......they told our trapper to show up at 4:40 tomorrow morning so she would have a "better chance" of snagging one of the 9 remaining appointments. They most likely told every single person in those 15 turned away cars the exact same thing. This is not sustainable.

When our rescue started working with SJACS and the Feral Freedom program, the competent vets at the shelter were doing up to 50 cats a day, five days a week. Now they are doing 55 cats A WEEK. No wonder we are not getting anywhere. Cats are dying on the streets, and the community has no place to turn.

Usually, we end our posts by saying we are grateful. We are ending this one by saying we are frustrated!!

To the total as***pe that stole the camera from the farm again....don't you realize you cannot use it??? We immediately deactivate the SIM card so no one can use it. You were smart enough to turn it off.....so I cannot locate it with the internal GPS. But it is useless to you unless you want to pay to get another SIM card. These are the cats we are keeping an eye on at this location. There is regularly a newcomer that needs to be TNR'd. We've also rescued several friendly cats from here. Ember, who was the last sweet girl we took from the farm, is thriving in her forever home. We are grateful to Anneliese! ❤🐾

An Important Update on the Future of Gatos de la Noche

Dear Supporters,

The plight of the community cat has been my passion for 16 years. Finding two feral litters at my school and struggling to find help convinced me that maybe I should get involved in this journey. I started with those two litters, thanks to the help of Jeanee Burns, and soon found myself feeding colonies and learning to trap all over the East Side of San Jose.

Since then, with an army of dedicated volunteers, we have TNR’d literally thousands of cats and are still feeding all of those original colonies today, plus a few more! Over the years, we have also found loving homes for more than 1,000 cats and kittens, preventing further death and suffering on the streets. We’ve always strived to be here for advice, support, education, and advocacy, and we hope we have made a lasting impact on animal welfare in San Jose.

But now, it is time for us to step back a bit.

The ongoing lack of support from the San Jose Animal Care Center has placed an overwhelming burden on local independent rescues, creating an unsustainable rescue landscape. Without a functional safety net from the city, the sheer volume of crisis situations has reached a breaking point, forcing us to reevaluate how we operate to protect our own sustainability.

Consequently, Gatos de la Noche is narrowing its core focus. Moving forward, we will no longer be taking requests from the general public, and we cannot accept any cats or kittens.

Instead, we are limiting our scope strictly to TNR with our established trapping partners and continuing our work with the targeted TNR program at HSSV.

Most importantly, our commitment to our existing colonies remains entirely unchanged. We are responsible for these cats and will absolutely continue caring for them.

Because of these systemic challenges, we will never stop advocating for better animal welfare practices and vital improvements at the San Jose Animal Care Center. If you share our concerns about the unsustainable state of SJACC, we urge you to use your voice, please contact the mayor directly at [email protected], and reach out to your local city council member as well.

UPDATE: Well the fabulous Dr. Morehouse pretty much told us what we knew. They have a nasty URI most likely viral. So we doing just about everything we can. We've changed up the eye meds.....again. We just have to get one little boy to start eating!!

We are grateful for Amy who is trying to nurse these babies back to health and Rachel who is taking her life in her hands trying to subq these kittens by herself!!

They made it to Fat Kitty City!! October and Velvet were driven to FKC by their caretakers, Rosie and Debbie last weekend. Cali is extremely difficult to trap. We have not given up on her! Hopefully we can convince her that this will be a better place to live! The girls will start in a catio inside a catio to get acclimated. When they are comfortable in the smaller catio, they will be moved into the big catio. When they get acclimated there they will have more freedom. We call this imprinting. We know they will have a better life here than the parking lot they were living in. We are beyond grateful for all of your help. ❤🐾
