You are invited to join Alum Rock Counseling Center (ARCC) at our 2026 Annual Fundraising Luncheon, which will take place on Friday May 22nd. This year, we are honoring Blanca Alvarado for her outstanding lifetime achievements as well as Super Role Model Dean McCully.
Blanca Alvarado, known as “La Madrina,” is a lifelong advocate for underrepresented communities whose career reflects the history of Latino activism in San José. After moving from Colorado at 16, she worked in orchards alongside migrant laborers, an experience that shaped her commitment to equity and political representation.
A San José High School graduate, she helped found several community organizations and led the local Mexican American Political Association. She championed district elections in San José, opening doors for more diverse leadership. In 1980, she became the first Latina on the City Council, later serving as Vice Mayor and Chair of the County Board of Supervisors.
In office, she focused on women, children, public health, the arts, and community programs, while also establishing the County’s Office of Women’s Advocacy and supporting major projects like the Mexican Heritage Plaza. She retired in 2008 after 28 years in public service.
Her many honors include national and international recognition, and a local middle school named in her honor. Alvarado continues to inspire younger generations to carry forward the work of advancing equity in areas like healthcare, housing, and representation.
