🚗 Today's How We Commute spotlight features Student Assistant Esmeralda!

Esmeralda's journey to MTI starts in Morgan Hill, where she drives north to San José. After parking at the South Campus Garage, she hops on a shuttle to campus and finishes her trip with a walk to the MTI office.

Her commute highlights something many travelers experience every day: getting from point A to point B often involves more than one mode of transportation!

John Flaherty built a transportation career from the ground up, starting as a cab driver in San Francisco and ramp serviceman at United Airlines. He rose to leadership roles at the nation’s capital, becoming a staffer for Members of Congress and Chief of Staff for Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta—including during the events of 9/11.

Now, he is joining us as a speaker at the Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership this September. The event will be emceed by Karen E. Philbrick, PhD, Executive Director of the Mineta Transportation Institute.

Following 9/11, Flaherty represented transportation leadership in the National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Security Group, working alongside senior representatives from Defense, Justice, State, the FBI, CIA, and other federal agencies to coordinate national counterterrorism policy and operations. Flaherty has also led infrastructure teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, served as a principal at a major private equity firm, and led a graduate program at Carnegie Mellon University as a Distinguished Service Professor.

Day 8 of spotlighted rail as a critical part of California's evolving transportation landscape. 🚆

Students began the day at Diridon Station, where they learned how multimodal planning and urban design are shaping one of the region's most important transportation hubs.

They then boarded Caltrain to learn about the railroad's electrification and grade separation projects before visiting the South Bay Historical Railroad Society to explore the history of rail in the region.

The day wrapped up at San Jose State University's Behavior, Accessibility, and Technology (BAT) Research Lab, where students explored research on human-machine interaction, accessibility, and automated vehicles, discovering how technology is helping create a safer and more inclusive transportation system.

From multimodal planning to rail innovation and emerging technologies, students saw how today's investments are shaping the future of transportation.
