🚗➡️🚆 Today’s How We Commute spotlight features MTI Student Assistant Esmeralda!

Esmeralda’s commute begins with a drive to the Morgan Hill Caltrain station. From there, she uses her SJSU Clipper BayPass to take Caltrain to San José Diridon station, picks up a coffee along the way, catches the 522 bus, and walks just 10 minutes from City Hall to campus.

Her commute is a great example of how driving and public transit can work together to connect people across the Bay Area. BayPass helps make these connections more accessible for SJSU students traveling to campus, work, internships, and other destinations throughout the region.

🚆➡️🚌 Today’s How We Commute spotlight features Mike Virtudazo, MTI’s Graphic Designer!

Mike’s commute starts in Stockton, where he boards ACE Rail for the ride to San José.

After arriving, he connects to a VTA bus to complete the trip to the MTI office at Lucas College and Graduate School of Business at SJSU.

His journey shows how regional rail and local transit can work together to connect people across cities and communities. For commuters traveling longer distances, those connections can make all the difference in getting where they need to go.

Mike’s commute also gives him something driving can’t: time to relax, catch up on emails, or simply enjoy the ride.

🎓 “I learned that leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room or always having the right answer.”

When Vanessa Ly started SJSU’s Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM) program, the BART engineer considered herself one of the quieter students in the classroom. Presentations, discussions, group projects—and the encouragement of her classmates—helped her become more confident sharing her ideas and shaped how she thinks about leadership.

Now a 2026 MSTM graduate, Vanessa reflects on the community she found in the program and how the experience changed the kind of transportation professional she wants to be.

For 31 Bay Area high school students, the 2026 Mineta Summer Transportation Academy (MiSTA) meant going behind the scenes of the systems that keep our region moving—from rail and aviation to autonomous vehicles, drones, urban planning, and more.

I really liked learning about how the facility operates and the role rail plays in moving goods. Big congratulations are in order!

MTI Executive Director Dr. Karen Philbrick has received the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) 2026 Excellence in Academia Award!

The award recognizes a woman in academia or research for outstanding leadership, mentorship, and contributions to transportation education and research—and Dr. Philbrick has built a career around all three.

Over the past decade, she has secured more than $44 million in competitive grants and contracts, grown MTI programs that reach learners from preschool through graduate school and into their careers, and championed research that helps agencies and communities across the country improve mobility for all.

We couldn’t be prouder to see her recognized with this well-deserved honor. Congratulations, Karen!

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Department of Transportation faced challenges without precedent in the history of our nation. As Deputy Chief of Staff, Michelle Poché Flaherty helped coordinate the policy and operational response across every DOT agency in the critical days and weeks that followed, and for her service in response to the attacks, Secretary Norman Y. Mineta awarded her the Transportation 9-11 Medal.

On September 9, Flaherty joins the Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership to offer a firsthand look at how Secretary Mineta and his team navigated one of the most consequential moments in U.S. transportation history.
