The San Jose Woman's Club, one of California's oldest women’s organizations, was established in 1894 as part of a nationwide social movement of women’s clubs that combined self-improvement with voluntary community work, addressing needs that interested women, such as kindergartens, libraries, and parks. The Clubhouse, at 75 S. 11th St. in downtown San Jose was built for the Club in 1929 and is the

third home of SJWC. The Clubhouse is available for rental for special occasions, meetings, and community events. Today, the San Jose Woman's club is no longer a same-sex organization, but it continues to focus on supporting women and the community by maintaining an active calendar of events, providing leadership and mentoring for women, scholarships for local students, funding local and women's charitable organizations, preserving its historic Clubhouse and performing charitable work. Membership is only $90 per year, $60 for seniors and students, and is open to all.

Small Rituals for Grief
Thursday, June 25th - 6:30 to 8:00 pm @ The Clubhouse

Join us in person to explore simple, heartfelt rituals that help ease grief and bring comfort, facilitated by Alexis Hart, a seasoned death care professional, grief ritualist, and grief educator.

Small Rituals for Grief is a free, gentle, community-centered workshop designed to offer simple, meaningful ways to tend to grief in your daily life through education and practical support.

Participants will learn accessible tools for emotional support that can be used beyond the event itself, encouraging ongoing care, resilience, and self-awareness.

We've had a great time working with Charity Burton and other friends from the San Jose Woman's Club during "anthropology"! We're honored to support the club's newest group, Stepping Up for Women and Girls (SWAG), as our nonprofit partner for the show.

Founded by Charity and Eileen Hunter, SWAG focuses on supporting women and girls in our community through group volunteering, partying with purpose, and building friendships through service. Meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse, with a Zoom option available for those who can't attend in person.

Meet the SWAG team at City Lights on Sunday, June 7! Before the 2 p.m. matinee of "anthropology," our SWAG friends will speak briefly on stage about their fine work. Check out their display in our lobby to learn how to get involved, or go to https://sjwomansclub.org/swag/.

And congratulate Charity on her recent graduation from San Jose State, where she's also in a master's program in Justice Studies! SJSU wrote a great story about Charity and SWAG: https://blogs.sjsu.edu/newsroom/2026/spring-grad-burton/.
