So much hard work behind these numbers, accomplished by the food recovery organizations out in the field, collecting this surplus for those in need. Much of it is coordinated through Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, with support from Peninsula Food Runners, Hunger at Home, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, Martha's Kitchen, Replate, Silicon Valley Food Recovery Council, Notimetowaste_food, San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School, Copia and others.
Santa Clara County businesses donated nearly 14 million pounds of surplus food in 2023, with the help of food recovery organizations. That’s the equivalent of more than 11.6 million meals to help ease hunger and food insecurity in Silicon Valley. The Santa Clara County Food Recovery Program, managed by Joint Venture Silicon Valley, also helps the environment by diverting food from the landfill, where it generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
