🐟 Fish Friday: The Pahrump poolfish just can’t seem to catch a break.

This tiny, endangered Nevada native has been living on the edge of extinction for decades.

In the early 1970s, groundwater pumping caused the only warm-water spring where Pahrump poolfish naturally occurred to dry up. Fortunately, fish were relocated to refuge sites around Nevada before the population was lost entirely.

But that wasn’t the end of the trouble.

At Lake Harriet, once home to Nevada’s largest refuge population of more than 15,000 Pahrump poolfish, illegally introduced crayfish and mosquitofish caused the population to plummet to just 362 fish within a year.

Biologists salvaged the remaining poolfish, and NDOW and Nevada State Parks worked together to remove the nonnative species and restore the habitat. In June 2020, 316 Pahrump poolfish were returned to Lake Harriet.

It’s a small fish with a big conservation story — and an important reminder that releasing aquarium fish or other unwanted animals into Nevada’s waters can have devastating consequences for native wildlife.
