We’re in tears over the widespread destruction in Nepal from Saturday’s earthquake. Relief supplies and professional medical people are greatly needed.

Although those are beginning to arrive, it will be years before buildings – and hearts – are restored. And some cultural landmarks are gone forever.

To contribute to immediate relief, you might consider donating to the American Red Cross, Save the Children, CARE, or UNICEF.

Many of you have asked how you can help through Lending Promise. We're still learning the impact of the earthquake on the women and families we serve.

At least two of our American board members plan to travel to Nepal to help out with broader relief efforts. Once we gain a better understanding of the needs and how we can best contribute to sustained development, we will provide a more thoughtful update.

Meanwhile, we pray for the people of Nepal.

It's ironic that one of the concepts that western organizations emphasize most in supporting women in developing countries is birth control education and supplies -- while some of our own U.S. government officials are trying to take away birth control rights and coverage from us. Don't they understand that taking away this right hurts men, too?
