Fall is in the air... and so are the tarantulas!

Did you know autumn is peak tarantula season in Northern California? 🍁 During this time of year, male tarantulas emerge from their burrows and wander the local trails on a mission to find a mate.

Fun fact: Male tarantulas will travel up to a mile or more searching for female burrows and female tarantulas can live up to 15 to 30 years!

Discover the misunderstood tarantulas of the Santa Cruz Mountains! Join Saved By Nature for a scenic autumn hike through rolling meadows, oak woodlands, and chaparral along the San Andreas Fault Line.

As we walk the footpaths, we’ll uncover the fascinating life cycles of the Bay Area blond tarantula and the bright-winged tarantula hawk wasp—exploring how these creatures shape the health of our local ecosystem.

What an unforgettable day at Satori Cellars for Saved By Nature’s 8th Anniversary Celebration. A full house, a beautiful summer afternoon, and a community that showed up from as far as San Francisco and the Central Valley.

Founder Richard Tejeda and Saved By Nature were honored with accommodations from Supervisor Sylvia Arenas and Jasmine Huang, Environmental Policy Aide for Supervisor Otto Lee, recognizing 8 years of work to reduce the environmental equity gap through transformative environmental education — and for connecting people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities to nature and the great outdoors.

It was smiles all around with Fred McCasland and CEO Mark Washbush from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley showing their support. Our partners WERC and Visionary Arts brought wildlife encounters and Japanese fan‑making that made the day unforgettable.

Huge gratitude to donors Victoria Villareal for her absolutely delicious desserts and Minerva Arellano for the stunning charcuterie board. And thank you to all our silent auction donors, to Satori Cellars, and everyone who attended. Grateful to paddle the waters of Elkhorn Slough, located on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Rumsen Ohlone people.

What an unforgettable day for Saved By Nature’s Bay Area Coastal Adventures program. Yesterday’s kayaking trip at Elkhorn Slough gave us beautiful weather and clear water flowing in from the Monterey Bay Canyon, plus exhilarating wildlife sightings - seals, sea lions, birds, and southern sea otters.

We were joined by reentry case worker Lorenzo Fosselman, Mike Strider, and also Francis Eymard Mendoza and Carla Munoz who made the day extra special. Building confidence while learning about this incredible natural resource is a powerful way to deepen appreciation for our waterways, and we’re grateful for everyone who joined us.

This event is made possible by Saved By Nature membership, donations, and in part by the REI Cooperative Action Fund.💚
