🌿 Our Senior Wellness Hike this past Tuesday at Guadalupe Oak Grove Park was filled with community, curiosity, and shared knowledge. Walking through the region’s last untouched oak grove felt like stepping back in time. 🌳

Caretaker Dave Poeschel joined us, sharing his deep knowledge of local history and introducing us to a monarch caterpillar on the edge of forming its cocoon—a tiny moment of magic unfolding quietly in the grove. 🐛✨

We also learned about the Acorn Woodpecker, a species whose world relies entirely on these oaks. They live in extended family groups and work together to care for their home. Their rhythms of family, cooperation, and shared responsibility beautifully echo our own community.

Here’s to the wisdom of old oaks, small wonders, and the threads that connect us to the land and each other. 💚

🌉🦀 A Day of Bay Wonders & Community Connection

This weekend gave us a day to remember. At Torpedo Wharf, we felt the joy of discovery—hauling up crabs of every shape and color, including the superhero‑looking northern kelp crab that caught everyone’s attention. All Dungeness crab were returned safely as you can only keep them outside of the Golden Gate. We managed 4 keeper red rock crab.🦀 Even our buddy, Pelly the Pelican, flew in close for a curious hello, and the sunshine made every moment brighter!

Meanwhile, out across the Golden Gate, we stepped into a quieter kind of magic. We learned about harbor porpoises—the shy, ultrasonic cousins of dolphins who disappeared from the Bay for 65 years and only returned after cleaner waters made their comeback possible. They travel in tiny introverted groups, speaking in frequencies we can’t hear, teaching us—through Native stories and their own gentle presence—to listen to the quiet voices of the ocean. 🐬🩵

And the best part: we actually saw multiple pods surfacing below us. A rare gift, and a reminder of how alive our Bay truly is.

We ended the morning the best way possible: sharing pizza, stories, and smiles. Community, wildlife, wonder, and shared learning—everything we love in one perfect day!

💛 Thank you to everyone who joined us and brought such warmth, curiosity, and community spirit.

🌿 This month’s Community Nature Hike took us to Mori Point, where we explored the rugged coastline and wandered through slopes bursting with native wildflowers. We also learned about two incredible local species — the endangered California red‑legged frog 🐸 and the San Francisco garter snake 🐍.

Thanks to years of community‑powered restoration by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in partnership with the National Park Service, Mori Point now thrives with renewed trails, vibrant native habitats, and the return of species once on the brink. 🌱✨

We closed the day with a gratitude circle, where everyone shared what they were most grateful for — a simple, powerful moment of connection.

We’re deeply grateful for our growing community of participants who continue to learn, explore, and heal with us. Every hike, every shared story, every moment of wonder strengthens a collective relationship with nature that not everyone has access to.💚

This work matters because when people connect with the land and with each other, they become the stewards and advocates who help us build a future where nature is accessible, welcoming, and healing for all. 🌎

🌄We can’t wait to keep growing, learning, and exploring with you!

We are so proud of Saved By Nature staff, Eva and Richard, for earning their Certified Interpretive Guide certifications — a lifetime credential in the field of environmental interpretation.

This certification strengthens our ability to create programs that provoke feeling, spark curiosity, and build connection rather than simply deliver instruction. High‑quality interpretation changes lives, and we’re committed to bringing that level of excellence to the Bay Area.

Right now, Richard and Eva are our only full‑time staff, and together we reach over 3,000 community members every year.

Close your eyes for a brief second and imagine what our impact will be when we have more staff who represent our community, more senior hikes, more camping trips, more fishing, more camaraderie, more capacity, and more opportunities to serve those who need us most.

And now we have an outstanding opportunity to bring people to Yosemite.

If you believe in our mission, consider supporting Saved By Nature so we can continue bringing first‑time park visitors — and returning ones — into the parks and preserves that need us for generations to come.

We are honored that Richard Tejeda, Founder and Executive Director of Saved By Nature, has been invited by our friends at Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) to speak at Juvenile Hall.

Richard will be speaking in a unit where some of the youth have been housed for years — the same unit he was placed in at 16 years old before being sent to the Arizona Boys Ranch until age 19.

His lived experience in that facility shaped him, challenged him, and now puts him in a unique position to reach young people walking a path he once knew firsthand.

If even one young person hears something that sparks hope, change, or acceptance of a new direction, it’s worth every moment.

During our Bay Area Coastal Adventures program, these five girls — who absolutely lit up with excitement — safely catch and release a bat ray.

The San Francisco Bay is the beating heart of our region and the second‑largest estuary in the U.S. Hands‑on experiences like this build real affinity for the Bay and help shape the leaders who will protect it for future generations.

From May 4–7, our staff will be at Yosemite National Park completing their CIG certifications, strengthening the expertise behind every program we offer.
