It was wonderful to welcome GO-Serve Director and California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday to Our City Forest’s Community Nursery and Training Center yesterday! 🌳

Director Fryday met with our AmeriCorps and California Climate Action Corps service members, staff and board members, toured our nursery, and learned more about how our Community Nursery supports urban canopy across the region.

🌱 Fun fact: In 2020, Our City Forest served as the launch site for California Climate Action Corps! Our City Forest was also selected as one of 28 inaugural host partners for the program’s first 63 Fellows statewide!

Thank you, Director Fryday, for visiting and for your leadership through California Volunteers and Governor Gavin Newsom in supporting service members who are creating greener communities across California!

We are excited to welcome a new cohort of San José Works summer interns to Our City Forest.

San José Works connects young people to meaningful paid work experience and career pathways. At Our City Forest, San José Works interns are gaining hands-on experience in urban forestry, nursery operations, environmental stewardship, and community service. They are learning what it takes to care for young trees, support volunteer events, maintain nursery spaces, and contribute to the long-term health of the urban forest.

This summer, OCF interns have been working alongside our staff, service members, and volunteers while learning about the responsibility, teamwork, and technical skills that go into maintaining a healthy community forest.

This summer, Our City Forest is continuing work to beautify and restore areas around Tully Community Fields with support from BeautifySJ and California Volunteers.

This project supports native habitat planting and sheet mulching along the Coyote Creek Trail corridor. We are replacing non-functional turf and weedy areas with climate-appropriate native trees, shrubs, and understory plants.

At Tully Fields, volunteers and OCF staff are helping prepare planting areas, spread mulch, support young native plants, and improve the site for long-term habitat value. Native trees and shrubs will help increase shade and cooling over time, support stormwater infiltration, create habitat for birds and pollinators, and contribute to a healthier watershed corridor.

Our Community Nursery & Training Center is where so much of Our City Forest’s work begins.

This year, we are excited to move forward important upgrades to our nursery production area, updating and improving the production area by installing a new shade structure, improving our existing shade house area, and adding a water refill station.

Shade is essential for protecting young trees and plants during hot weather, especially as summers become longer and more intense. Improved growing areas help us care for nursery stock more efficiently, reduce plant stress, and support healthier trees before they are planted in the community. We are grateful for support from Valley Water’s Safe, Clean Water Program, which is helping make these Community Nursery Upgrades possible.

Our regular hours are:
Thursday–Friday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
