Community programs like AACI Senior Wellness Program (SWP) play a vital role in enhancing quality of life for older adults, helping them stay connected, active, and engaged. For Po, a Taiwanese immigrant, the sense of community that AACI’s SWP offers was invaluable.

In the house that was once bustling with the sounds of his family, Po spent most of his afternoons alone, cooking meals for one and taking isolated walks around his neighborhood. His days had become lonely.

A friend, knowing what it was like to navigate life as an older adult, suggested SWP at AACI. After signing up, Po connected with the program manager who took the time to understand what he was looking for. That first day was three years ago, and it changed Po’s daily routine completely. 🤩

He threw himself into everything SWP had to offer. Staff helped him sign up for classes that matched his interests, and Po eagerly embraced each opportunity. He attended exercise classes twice a week, never missing a session. He found joy in every moment, connecting with his peers and discovering new passions. Po enjoyed dancing so much that he didn’t just participate, he led a dance for the SWP team during last year’s Lunar New Year event, bringing everyone together with his energy and spirit. 🏮 Po had found more than just a way to stay healthy; he’d found a fun way to thrive, dancing with his friends and fully immersing himself in the community.

Po also joined the Senior Nutrition Program, where he enjoyed freshly cooked meals three times a week. The lunch program has become a cornerstone of his weekly routine: 💬 “The lunch program makes my life easier. I don’t need to cook so often. I feel healthier. A bit more active, and I make more friends too!”

Now, Po’s days overflow with laughter, movement, and shared stories over delicious meals. He’s found a community at AACI where he can lean on others for support and simply enjoy life together. He now encourages his own friends and family to join him at AACI, excited to share the sense of belonging he’s discovered. ❤️

Recently, a research paper titled "Exploring Motivations and Barriers: A Mixed-Methods Study of Precepting Among Advanced Practice Behavioral Health Nurses" was published in Sage Journals with contributions from AACI's Behavioral Health team. 🤩

The purpose of this study was to identify motivations and barriers that current psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) encounter when deciding to precept students and analyze the relationship between demographic variables and the likelihood of precepting. The article acknowledges the current shortage and challenge with preceptors to train psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.

To read the full research paper, please visit: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10783903261457104?_gl=1*4xi6kj*_up*MQ..*_ga*NDI0MzE5NDg3LjE3ODQ2NzcxMDg.*_ga_60R758KFDG*czE3ODQ2NzcxMDckbzEkZzEkdDE3ODQ2NzcxMDkkajU4JGwxJGg0MjE5NTcwODg.

At AACI, we have been tackling the shortage and have been actively involved in training PMHNPs since 2019. Our behavioral health training program is continually expanding and we're proud to be able to provide our nurse practitioner interns with exposure to community mental health.
