Note: this info is just a starting point and will get updated once we have input from community members. Vision for an association:
-------------------------------------
- an association with modern outlook focusing on core values of Sikhism (seva/share/help) and catering to all community members regardless of if they are born/brought up in US or have migrated to US.
- provide a platform where our
kids can learn the core values by leading/participating in activities and watching their parents do the same.
- provide a platform where we can help community members ie if a person is new to the area or starting a new business (we can refer new business etc), pass on someone's resume at our work place etc. etc.
- provide an online community platform (via facebook) so that non-local members can also participate/contribute.
- anyone can join regardless of religion. However, some/most of the activities will be focused on Sikhism.
- culture: honesty/integrity, selfless service, consensus/collective decision making, no power games.
- last, but not the least - have fun, fun, and fun. Some ideas on what this association can offer
-------------------------------------------------------
- History of Sikhism and culture
I believe our history is so rich that we will not need to convince our kids to follow Sikhi if they know our history. Parents/older kids can volunteer. They can pick any topic and give presentations. This way, kids can learn about research, how to prepare presentation materials and then present. They will get a good experience in public speaking also. Once in a while, we can get Sikh history and culture experts as guest speakers. Some of this history could be covered in Punjabi school at local Gurudwaras. We can look into what all they offer.
- Big sisters and Big brothers Program
Pair up younger kids with college going/graduated kids for mentoring. I have noticed that high school kids are sometimes confused about which major to pick and how to go about applying for college etc. Although parents can help, kids are more open to listening to their own generation. Also, sometimes kids are struggling in school with bullying etc and having someone to discuss it with can help. This kind of mentoring can be done online as well.
