San José, CA—On Saturday, 18 November 2023 at 10:00 a.m., the Phil Sheridan Camp #4, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will conduct its annual Remembrance Day ceremony at
the Grand Army of the Republic cemetery plot, located at Oak Hill Memorial Park (300 Curtner Avenue, San José, California).
On Saturday morning, 18 November 2023 the Phil Sheridan Camp will honor the memory of all Civil War veterans. The ceremony is planned to last approximately 30 minutes. Public and media
are encouraged to attend.

Another Santa Clara County celebration of veterans is the Gilroy Veterans Day Parade. As with all Veterans day events, this one also kicks off at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month every year. Hosted by the Gilroy Veterans Hall and the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District.

This year’s Grand Marshall for the San Jose Veterans Day Parade, Captain Doug Beck, Navy Reservist and Director of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), reporting directly to the Secretary of Defense. In this role, Doug oversees efforts to accelerate the Department's adoption of commercial technology throughout the military and also serves as a senior advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense on technology innovation, competition, and strategic impact. In his previous experience with DIU, Doug founded and led its joint reserve component from the inception in 2015 through 2019.

The UVC was formed in October of 1922 and is composed of delegates from those veteran organizations, and their auxiliaries, chartered by the Congress of the United States and/or recognized by the State of California. The UVC is a non-political and non-sectarian organization established to promote the goals and objectives of all veteran organizations for the common good and welfare of all veterans, their dependents, widows, orphans, and citizens of the United States.
The primary mission of the UVC is to support veterans and active duty military members, and their families, particularly those with disabilities. The organization will embrace diversity while leveraging varying abilities to meet the needs of veterans of Santa Clara County. The organization will be fully transparent in social and county activities that favorable impact both veterans and the community in whole. We’ll make the necessary investments in personnel, systems and processes for continued growth and organizational distinction. This will be achieved through Administrative excellence, Innovation, Communication and Ex*****on while building team cohesion.
The goal of the UVC is to support veterans, through their respective organizations, and to further the exchange of information or ideas for improving service to veterans and their families. The UVC promotes veteran activities and provides a sense of respect and esprit de corps for all veterans and recognition of their sacrifices. The UVC is designed to pass on a sense of loyalty while adhering to Warrior Ethos, Our Country, and Respect for all veterans.
Additionally, the UVC shall:
Support veterans by providing information on legislation, or other actions, that impact veterans within various Santa Clara County veteran organizations;
Conduct proper annual service and ceremony on the day designated by the U.S. Government such as Memorial Day. To honor all veterans, from all wars, who’s made the ultimate sacrifice for their country; “All Gave Some; Some Gave All”
Support local patriotic observances such as Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and other city or county patriotic observances.
Be the organizational lead for planning and ex*****on of the Veterans Day Parade conducted downtown San Jose as one of the largest in Northern California to honor all those who have served, and those continuing to serve their country.
The UVC promotes education of youth and their civil obligation for social awareness and the promotional of programs in the betterment of the veteran community in Santa Clara County.
