Hello alums! I'm coming here to try to save Mosaic's spring internship. Please read! (and act if you can)
People ask why I don’t really retire. Here’s why: working with Mosaic gives me hope, a sense of purpose and a feeling that I’m helping, in a tiny way, fight the threat to our democratic institutions and values.
I can’t keep a daily journalist’s hours any more, but I can use my skills to help young people navigate the flood of information at their fingertips, and to train ethical storytellers to discern the truth.
I’ve felt uplifted working in person with teens and with other journalists.
But Mosaic Journalism is facing a serious funding crunch. We’re asking you to support us to help fund our spring internship and upcoming workshops.
To donate — $1,000, $500, $100, but we will appreciate any amount — please go to the online donation page for Mosaic of our fiscal sponsor Bay City News Foundation.
A quick update on Mosaic Journalism: We’ve expanded with workshops, internships and boot camps for high school and college students. In the past year, we’ve trained nearly 60 students.
We’ve launched careers that have gone beyond our wildest dreams.
Emily Hung, M’18, covers the White House for MSNBC. Tomás Mier, M’15, a pop and Latin music reporter for Rolling Stone, has become an influencer with 151,000 followers on TikTok. And Hannah Knowles, M‘16 shared a Pulitzer Prize with her Washington Post colleagues this year for breaking news coverage.
Now about our challenges. Three of our top funders have pulled out of high school journalism. Yet the need for teaching media literacy and journalism has ballooned. In San Jose, 70% of public high schools offer no journalism. Many students don’t understand what a newspaper is or does.
What Mosaic does works: You can read about the teens turning to AI for counseling, San Jose State’s parking nightmare, the No Kings Day protests — as well as features on flag football and more here.
Please help us continue our transformative work. You may donate via our new fiscal sponsor Bay City News Foundation. If you’re donating by check, please make the payment to Bay City News Foundation and write “For Mosaic Journalism” on the memo line, and mail it to BCNF at 900 Hilldale Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94708.
To pay via donor-advised fund, designate the donation to BCNF's EIN, #83-0654488. (Please note this is a different sponsor and EIN than our previous ones.)
Thanks for reading, and thanks for your support.
Sharon
