🌟 Leadership Spotlight: Derek Chang

Meet Derek Chang, EOSV Board Member and Member Engagement Chair for 2026–2027, and Co-Founder of Stratus Data.

Derek’s journey from scientist to entrepreneur is a story of curiosity, building, and continuous learning. After earning his PhD and working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility, Derek transitioned from research into Silicon Valley, joining Optimizely before taking the leap to co-found Stratus Data.

Today, Derek is passionate about building more than products, he builds teams, relationships, culture, and organizations designed to endure.

A Jeffersonian Dinner creates space to slow down, ask better questions, share real experiences, and connect beyond the surface.

For the first time, EOSV will host a Jeffersonian Dinner, giving our members an opportunity to step away from the usual networking format and make room for deeper, more meaningful conversations.

What happens when leaders make space for the conversations that usually go unspoken?

At the US West Leadership Summit, JRad, Alice, Jeff Moore, Sindhu, Kenji and Linda came together for a meaningful exchange around emotional intelligence, conflict facilitation, trust, and better problem-solving.

One key takeaway: conflict doesn’t always need to be avoided—it needs to be handled with intention.

Through tools like clearing rounds, reflective listening, and facilitated conversations, the group explored how slowing down, listening without immediately reacting, and creating space for vulnerability can help turn tension into deeper understanding.

The conversation also focused on the EOS Issue-Solving Process—getting to the root cause, prioritizing what truly matters, making decisive choices, and turning discussions into clear actions with ownership and deadlines.

Beyond the frameworks and tools, the experience reinforced something equally important: connection matters.

When leaders create a space built on trust, confidentiality, openness, and shared experiences, conversations can go deeper—and meaningful progress can happen faster.

Because leadership isn’t just about solving problems.

It’s about having the courage to address what’s beneath them. 💙
