Somos Mayfair

Somos Mayfair Then, we moved to the deeper work of changing lives.

SOMOS Mayfair supports children, organizes families, and connects neighbors to uplift the dreams, power, and leadership of community and address systemic inequities. Beginning in 1997, the residents of Mayfair and regional leaders worked together to address chronic issues of poverty and hopelessness in the Mayfair neighborhood. We began with making changes in areas that we could see: hiring crossi

ng guards and adding new traffic lights; improving sidewalks; replacing graffiti with community murals; recovering Silver Creek, and replanting the oldest community garden in San José. During our first ten years we succeeded in increasing worker’s skills by enrolling 500 adults in literacy, ESL and high school/GED classes, enrolling over 1,000 children in health insurance, and launching a neighborhood-wide, school readiness initiative targeting children ages 0-5. Knowing that no one organization could do everything needed to change a community, we took it upon ourselves to build relationships with others. We built coalitions and continue to work closely with many allies including non-profit social and human service agencies, housing developers, mental health practitioners, cultural workers, community colleges, adult educators, community organizers, and hospitals and community health providers to bring critical programs, services and new resources to our community.

🎉 Celebrating our Jóvenes Activos 🎉

This year, more than 20 young leaders completed the program, strengthening their leadership skills and making a lasting impact in their community.

One of their biggest achievements was helping secure approval of the Exclusive Negotiating Agreement between SOMOS Mayfair, the School of Arts and Culture at MHP, and Alum Rock Union School District, bringing the vision of a rebuilt MACSA one step closer to reality.

Through organizing, advocacy, and community outreach, these young leaders showed the power of youth-led change while connecting with elected officials, community leaders, and partners along the way.

A special congratulations to our three graduating seniors! 🎓 Your leadership and dedication have left a lasting mark, and we can’t wait to see what comes next for you all.

Congratulations to all of this year’s graduates and program leaders, we are so proud of you! ❤️✨

🎉 Congratulations, Young STEAMers! 🚀

Last week, we celebrated the final session of our afterschool workshop with Young STEAMers, and what an amazing journey it has been!

Each student received a certificate of completion, a customized framed class photo, and a special goodie bag to celebrate all of their hard work and creativity. Families also got a chance to see the incredible projects, experiments, and discoveries their children explored throughout the program. ❤️

A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for this special celebration. We’re excited to continue our partnership with Young STEAMers and keep inspiring the next generation of innovators, creators, and leaders!

¡Sí Se Pudo! ✊🏽

Yesterday, the Alum Rock Union School District Board voted 4–1 to begin negotiations with the Si Se Puede Collective for the rebuild of MACSA. This is a major victory for our community and a powerful reminder that when we organize and stand together, our voices create change.

This win was only possible because of the continued support, solidarity, and love shown for the MACSA movement. Thank you to every community member, advocate, and especially the youth who courageously shared what MACSA has meant to them and the dreams they carry for future generations.

This is more than a building, it’s about investing in culture, community, opportunity, and the future of our youth. The fight continues, but yesterday proved that our community power is stronger than ever. ❤️

1,900+ new businesses created, 1,400+ existing businesses scaled 📈

The Social Entrepreneurs for Economic Development (SEED) Initiative has helped create and scale more than 3,300 businesses in California. More businesses could be supported through SEED — and the data from previous years of SEED clearly shows that this program is a strong and strategic investment for California’s economic growth. Now is the time to reinvest.

As we’re closing out Small Business Month, we urge Governor Newsom and legislative and budget leaders to reinvest in immigrant entrepreneurship and the state’s economy by including Assemblymember Carrillo and Senator Becker’s SEED budget request in the final 2026–27 state budget.
