Hector Armienta - Opera Cultura

A Latinx-Hispanic opera company based in San Jose, CA Cuentos has been performed in San Jose and in Guadalajara, Mexico's Degollado Theater.

HISTORY
Founded by composer Héctor Armienta, our programming in the past has included presenting Latinx-Hispanic opera, collaborating with other organizations in our community, and providing training for young people in the performing arts. While San Jose remains our artistic home, we have also presented and co-presented in New York, Washington, D.C., and México. Notable performances include La Llorona: A Musical Drama, Rio de Mujéres, Bless Me, Ultima: A Mexican-American Opera, and the immigration song cycle opera Cuentos de Peregrinacón. Opera Cultura also initiated the Arte Sin Fronteras (Art Without Borders) Initiative, a cross-cultural exchange between San Jose, CA and Guadalajara, Mexico.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Stephanie, a third-year college student, shares her experience of working in the fields. in 2020 during the pandemic. She was a student at SJSU but returned to working as a farmworker out of necessity. Héctor Armienta composed a song cycle inspired by her story and other similar stories.

CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Interview with Librettist/Stage Director John de los Santos, who wrote the libretto to Jorge Sosa's new opera OFRENDA. The opera was commissioned by Austin Opera and opened this weekend.

VIVA LA VOZ - Gomez Conducts!!!
It is with great pleasure that Opera Cultura announces Maestro Vladimir Gómez will conduct Opera Cultura's inaugural Viva la Voz concert in Spring 2027. Maestro Gómez brings extensive artistic leadership to this milestone event, most recently directing the historic revival of El Orgullo de Jalisco at Teatro Degollado, featuring legendary tenor Plácido Domingo. His deep expertise in the zarzuela tradition, including the celebrated works of Federico Moreno Torroba, makes him an ideal artistic partner for an evening where Mariachi and Zarzuela meet. We are honored to welcome his artistry to Opera Cultura's first-ever Opera Cultura Festival.

Es un gran placer anunciar que el Maestro Vladimir Gómez dirigirá el concierto inaugural de Viva la Voz de Opera Cultura en la primavera de 2027. El Maestro Gómez aporta un amplio liderazgo artístico a este evento histórico, habiendo dirigido recientemente el histórico renacimiento de El Orgullo de Jalisco en el Teatro Degollado, con la participación del legendario tenor Plácido Domingo. Announcing our new season! 🎶 Opera Cultura is bringing bilingual sing-alongs to San José senior centers with Canta conmigo, ringing in the new year with Cantar con los Reyes, and producing our first-ever Opera Cultura Festival — featuring Viva la Voz, where Mariachi meets Zarzuela, plus a workshop of a new work-in-progress and a master class.
