In a time of darkness and devastation, hope can bloom in the most unexpected places. Chenda Chhi, Founder of Coral Tree Education Foundation, recalls a moment of pure clarity during the hardships of her youth: seeing the vibrant orange of a coral tree standing tall in a desolate rice field.

In a landscape of grey mud, pouring rain, and exhausted faces, those bright blossoms were a reminder that life and beauty still existed. Today, that tree serves as the namesake for our mission. Just as the coral tree thrives in the middle of a field, we believe Cambodian children can flourish, even when surrounded by the most difficult circumstances, if they are given the chance to grow.

Education is the water and sunlight these children need to blossom. We must not stop until every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

At 18 years old, arriving in Lincoln, Nebraska, as a refugee, the future was uncertain for Chenda Chhi — Founder of Coral Tree Education Foundation. But one thing changed everything: the opportunity to go to school.

Starting as a high school freshman at 18 wasn't easy, but it opened the door to a college degree that completely redefined a life path. For a "very poor immigrant" who relied on grants to get through, education was more than just a classroom—it was the bridge from surviving to thriving.

Education remains the fastest and most effective way to lift children and women out of poverty. When we provide a child with a desk and a book, we aren't just teaching them to read; we are giving them the power to find success and eventually give back to their own communities.

The scars of Cambodia’s history are deeply personal and painful. When the Khmer Rouge took power, they disassembled the very heart of society: the family unit.

Imagine being 14 years old, standing in a desolate rice field during a torrential downpour, holding your 13-year-old sister as she vibrates uncontrollably from malaria. In those moments of extreme fear and devastation, there was no mother or father to call for—only strangers and killers in the middle of nowhere.

Families were either killed or forced apart, leaving children to endure the hardest conditions imaginable.

We share these stories not just to remember the past, but to protect the future. By supporting education today, we provide the stability and opportunity that was once stripped away from an entire generation.

To understand the challenges Cambodia faces today, we must look back at a history of devastating conflict.

During the Vietnam War, Cambodia became a target when the Viet Cong crossed the border for refuge. In a secret decision by the US government, 2.5 million tons of bombs were dropped on Cambodian land—a weight equal to all the bombs dropped in entire Europe during World War II.

This devastation paved the way for the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot, who sought to restart civilization at "Year Zero." Today, 50 years later, the scars of war and genocide still trap millions in extreme poverty.

We believe the cycle of hardship ends with the classroom. We must not stop until every child has access to a decent basic education.

Before the tragedy of war and genocide in the 1970s, Cambodia experienced a "Golden Age" defined by peace and abundance. It was a time when children grew up without the extreme hardships often seen today.

That world changed when the spread of the Vietnam War and a horrific civil war led to one of the world’s worst genocides. In less than four years, half the population was lost, and the nation’s foundation—its schools, books, and educational infrastructure—was systematically destroyed.

Despite a level of destruction that made rebuilding seem nearly impossible, the spirit of Cambodia’s children remains unbroken. They are talented, curious, and incredibly eager to learn. We are dedicated to helping them reclaim their future through the power of education.

Cambodia is a remarkably young country, with 50% of the population under the age of 35. Yet, in many rural villages, the dream of an education is slipping away.

Our founder, Chenda Chhi, has seen the reality firsthand: children trying to learn in broken-down schools where rain pours through the roofs during monsoon season. At Coral Tree Education Foundation, we believe these children deserve a foundation that lasts.

We don't just patch roofs; we knock down the old, clear the land, and build new schools with foundations designed to last 200 years.

The transformation is immediate. In villages like Prek Snor, a new building brings a surge of hope—and students.

We’ve seen the student population triple, with children from neighboring villages flocking to our classrooms so quickly that we’ve had to set up extra tables and chairs outside just to keep up with the demand.

When we build a school, we change the dynamic of an entire village for generations to come.
