📘 A Legacy of Learning, Leadership & Lift ✈️

Professor Gerry Fairbairn has spent his life lifting others higher, from teaching future pilots at San Jose State and Westminster College to co-founding aviation programs that shape the industry today.

His work helped launch the University Aviation Association’s Policy Seminar and the Council on Aviation Accreditation (AABI), ensuring the next generation of aviation professionals soar with excellence.

On November 15, 2025, we’ll honor Gerry’s remarkable contributions with the National Aeronautics Association Award.

✈️ From Olympian to Aviation Leader 🏆

Before becoming President of Operations at Joby Aviation, Bonny Simi’s path took her from the Olympic luge track to the cockpit of a Boeing 777, and even to the newsroom at KGO-TV.
She founded JetBlue Technology Ventures, served as a JetBlue pilot and leader, and continues to mentor new aviators while helping launch Joby’s revolutionary eVTOL aircraft.
Now, her lifelong passion for flight will be celebrated with the 2025 Crystal Eagle Award from the Aero Club of Northern California. 💎

🚀 From Student Pilot to Aviation Leader 🚀

Gerry Fairbairn’s aviation story began in junior high, washing and waxing airplanes for flying time. That spark led to an Aeronautics degree from San Jose State, over 3,000 flight hours, and a lifelong mission to advance aviation education.

He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force, earn an MBA and Ph.D., pioneer computer-based flight simulations, and help establish the Council on Aviation Accreditation (AABI), setting the standard for aviation programs across the country.

Now, Gerry’s incredible impact will be recognized with the National Aeronautics Association Award on November 15, 2025.

For over 35 years, Bonny Simi has been part of the Bay Area’s vibrant aviation community, from teaching students at San Carlos and Palo Alto Airports to flying jets from SFO and mentoring new pilots today at Byron and Marina.

Now, as President of Operations at Joby Aviation, Bonny is helping to shape the future of flight with electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The Aero Club of Northern California is proud to recognize her lifelong contributions with the 2025 Crystal Eagle Award.

That early passion grew into a lifelong mission to advance aviation education and leadership.
He went on to pioneer computer-based simulations in aviation management, help establish the Council on Aviation Accreditation (now AABI), and inspire countless students and professionals throughout his distinguished career.
