Happy Flag Day and congratulations to Life Scout Sophie from Troop 688, Polaris District! Yesterday, Sophie completed her Eagle Scout Service Project with an initial goal to retire 250 U.S. flags in honor of America's 250th anniversary.

To tackle a large backlog of unretired flags that had grown over the years, Sophie assembled a team of volunteers for a formal retirement ceremony at the Gate of Heaven Veterans Memorial site. In a fitting tribute to Independence Day, her team retired a final total of 704 flags! WOW!

Thank you to everyone who contributed flags for this project, including VFW San Jose, Pacific Skyline Council, Golden Gate Area Council, and local fire and sheriff stations.

Our staff spotlight series continues today as we feature a leader who ensures our council's vital systems, camps, and backend operations run seamlessly every single day: Michael Wilson.

Michael Wilson serves as Director of Support Services at Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, where he oversees technology infrastructure, camp operations, compliance, and data systems, basically the systems that keep everything running behind the scenes. An Eagle Scout himself, Michael has spent more than 18 years in professional Scouting, with a background spanning camping, finance, and field operations. He currently manages Camp Hi-Sierra and Camp Chesebrough and oversees the council's finances.

Outside the office, Michael is a dad of three boys, two active Scouts, and one future Cub Scout in the making. He is a technology tinkerer, a seasoned cruise traveler with 29 Princess Cruises voyages under his belt, and a baker of truly unreasonable quantities of cookies for council events. He keeps two camps running smoothly and somehow still finds time to make sure no one goes home without dessert.

Michael's incredible dedication keeps two entire camps running smoothly. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and his multi-talented expertise.

So excited that the Santa Clara Valley Carvers were able to attend Scout-O-Rama. They demonstrated amazing woodcarving skills and projects, showing our scouts and Bay Area families what is possible. Check out their website for a meeting near you if you're interested in the craft.

While demonstrating woodcarving at Scout-O-Rama last weekend, Gil and Roy from Gilroy Gardens joined our woodcarving booth and lifted the spirits of scouts passing by. A sincere thank you to the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, Scouting America and Scouting America for bringing everyone together for this Bay Area event.
