Many were upset after two murals outside of a building sold about a year ago in East San Jose were painted over by the building’s new owner.

Two community murals connected to San Jose youth and the city’s Indigenous community were painted over after a building was sold, sparking a dispute between the former and current owners over whether the artwork was supposed to remain.

A sad update for our community: Martha’s Kitchen has painted over the two historical murals on the building we sold to them. Also removed was scared White Sage that was used by for ceremony and our community,

When we transferred the building, we specifically asked that the murals be preserved, and they agreed, promising to leave them alone as part of the community’s heritage.

These weren't just walls, they were a piece of our community’s story:

• One was created by children ages 6–15 from the Indian Education Center.
• The other was painted by local muralist Carlos Rodriguez as a powerful symbol of our neighborhood.

We wanted to bring transparency to what happened and honor the artists whose meaningful work was taken down without warning.
Our community’s history and youth art deserve respect and honesty.
