Happy T Shirt Tuesday! Starting next week, wear your RNPA shirt every Tuesday, take a group photo with your unit, and DM your photo to the RNPA Instagram. One participating group will be randomly selected each week to receive a meal for their unit/shift. Keep participating throughout the year because the units that show the most RNPA spirit will receive a grand prize at the end of the year.

Thanks to members’ support for our advocacy at the County and State levels, the 2026-27 County budget was passed without the proposed drastic service cuts to the healthcare budget, which would have increased the severe impact of H.R. 1 in terms of jobs, services and programs. An additional $250 million in news funds for public hospitals was included in the State budget with Santa Clara County expected to receive about $20-30 million of that allocation, based on historical allocation percentages.

“The good news is that public health positions have been preserved, and the budget allows for four new primary care clinics in underserved areas,” said RNPA President Allan Kamara, “We are extremely gratified that the hours we have spent on public and private advocacy on behalf of our members have been successful in protecting our members’ jobs, even though we will have to deal with some program and unfilled position cuts.

Between the heat, back-to-back patients, and 12-hour days on your feet, it's easy to put yourself last on the list. A few reminders from us to you this month: Keep water at your station — don't wait until break to rehydrate. Electrolytes matter, especially after a long stretch without a real break. Protect your sleep between shifts — your body needs the recovery as much as your patients need you sharp. Step outside for even 5 minutes of fresh air when you can. You take care of everyone else. This summer, let's take care of each other too.

RNPA was able to prevail in a dispute with the County during the recent budget negotiations, saving 16-18 positions with nurses’ rights preserved and maintaining some choice regarding their new positions. Most egregious were situations where the County was proposing to move nurses completely out of their competency area.
RNPA received a nice thank-you from one nurse, who was able to be transferred to a preferred position in another behavioral health service.

“I cannot thank the RNPA staff enough - particularly James Mount and Adam Cole - for the enormous effort they put forth for my transfer,” she said “It's been a roller coaster and very stressful, but they both made it so much more bearable, with their kindness and quick responses. It meant the world to me and my family. I'm super excited about my transfer now!”

The annual Stars & Strides fundraiser for the VMC Foundation brought out at least 100 nurses to participate! The RNPA booth did a brisk business in t-shirts and other RNPA merch. Our partnership with the Foundation continues beyond the passage of Measure A, and is an important way we continue to support each other and the Santa Clara County safety net. Thanks, nurses!

RNPA welcomes Adam Cole to the position of Office Executive Manager, where he will oversee RNPA’s association reps, organizers, and will support the RNPA Board of Directors on RNPA’s strategy, political efforts, and negotiations. In this role he will be engaged in enhancing direct member representation across the County, while helping hire staff for RNPA’s current vacancies.

Adam comes to us with 15 years of labor experience, and most recently represented County Employees here in Santa Clara County as part of CEMA. Has worked in and around hospitals for many years, and was responsible for many successful contract negotiations for successor and foundational MOUs.

Patti has worked in the Santa Clara Health system since 2006. Her first nursing job was at Valley Medical Center’s 6MED, formerly 4MED, and has also worked at PAMF Urgent Care in Mountain View and VSC Neurosurgery Clinic. / Throughout her nursing career she fell in love with empowering and supporting nurses, as well as caring for patients. Her leadership roles have been many, including helping to integrate O’Connor, Hospital, Regional Medical Center and DePaul Health Center into the Santa Clara County Health System, and serving on multiple committees and task forces designed to upgrade skills, improve outcomes and support the staff. / Earning her ADN from Evergreen Community College she began her nursing career at VMC in 2006, and earned her BSN from San Jose State University. / With three grown children, her passion for nursing is strong and she believes that the integrity of the nursing profession is worth fighting for.
